Default crank and cam sensors

Are the crankshaf and the camshaft sensors the same parts,I have a dead scooby at the moment and the RAC man thought the crank sensor was us so I have fitted a new one but car still not firing up. Thinking of fitting the old one I took off the crank in place of the one on the cam.........I have a pre facelift Turbo.

To see if it's at least producing a signal, connect a voltmeter (analogue is best for this) across the terminals and pass a screwdriver (or similar) quickly and close across the face of the sensor. You should see a reaction on the meter.

Cheers mate, tried that and both the crank and cam sensors ( which ARE slightly different, the cam sensor has a metal sleeve fitted to it so it will not go into the hole for the crank and the off set of the bolt holes are slightly different so bolt will not fit and the plug alignment lugs are left handed on one and right handed on the other so they will not fit the loom unless you cut the plugs off and refit them to the other part of the loom!! ) showed the values changing as metal moved near sensor for both sensors. So both cam crank and ECU replaced or swapped over for spares. MAF next or Water temp sender...............?

Any fault codes stored in the ECU ??
Might narrow the fault down a bit.

Unfortunately I took the ECU (Z4) out and replaced it with the original one (D7) to disprove to me that it was not a dead ECU. I tried the car again and no luck........swapped the ECU'S back again so I should imagine the code will have been lost.

So far I have replaced the Crankshaft Sensor, Tested the Cam Shaft Sensor by use of a meter and moving a lump of Metal near it - the reading altered so I am assuming it is working and tried another ECU in the Car.

Having had a look in the search box on this site and other places it may be the MAF or water temperature sender.....

Would a duff MAF or Water Temperature Sender stop the car starting completely? Any way to check their condition?

It would be worth checking the Resistance values of the sensors seeing as you have a meter :
Cam and crank sensors 950 ~ 1,250 ohms.
Coolant Temp Sensor 2.0 ~ 3.0 Kohms at 20 deg C
270 ~ 370 Kohms at 80 deg C

The Coolant temp sensor and MAF wont actually prevent the engine from starting - they will make the engine run rough once the engine is started.
Have you checked for Fuel delivery and a Spark ??

The Pump is running as it can be heard but not split a pipe to check if it is getting to the engine, BUT I had the RAC call and had a look.
He tried spraying Easy Start into the induction pipe work whilst I cranked the car and nothing happened.
I have used easy start on other cars (my old TR7 many Years ago) and if there were a spark the car would have started or tied to start up even if no fuel were present so I tend to think there is an electrical problem on the car.

Surely the starting point, as suggested by Merlin above, is to get a plug out, and see if it is wet and whether it is firing. If you do not want to pull a plug just use an old one or put a screw driver. Better still put a meter on it.

Ignition amplifier knackered got a very weak spark, well done for the assistance chaps. Mate at the garage is trying to find a new one. Anyone know of a link to a site or is it a Subaru only part?
