Default How long did your shocks last?

Hi,

Got a MY05 Wagon and was wondering, on average how long did your shocks last?

Got about 56,000 kms on the clock and the wagon feels like it might be needing some new ones.

Thanks for the help.

I guess it is touch and go.

Might be some good ones and some bad ones. The STi's are prolly better off.

The rear shocks in my 2002 STI are shot. The dealer checked them - said they're sound. They passed the MOT - But they clunk and bang over rough surfaces and round corners and even feel a settleing when you stop or go again. the left one is worse and pretty sure its the "common" shock failure in this model.

Interesting, I do get the vibrations at certains speeds, and the rear ones bang a bit more than they used to.

As usual they started doing this when the warranty ended...........

Are you serious???

What kind of roads do you use, to get an idea if that could "help" that happen so early?

Yes, only the second time the car had been out in the rain was to take it for the rear shocks, it was unmarked not a chip used only if I wanted to (use of another vehicle) on weekends or days off, totally pampered and allways garaged. Mike

I was on the phone to a company called Camskill today ordering my new shocks. I got a pair made by KYB who make the shocks for Subaru themselves (OE shocks and exactly the same ones you'd get from the factory) and was charged £138 (the pair) + £10 for p&p. The guy I spoke to, Mike, out of interest phoned Subaru and asked for a price for these (same) shocks. He was told £150 each + the VAT. Is that a rip off or what?

The invoice for the 2 rear shocks done under warranty for mine said they were £250 each! (MY03 STi)

If i can afford it and they go again think ill go for the KYB AGX.

Is there a problem on the hawkeye shocks as well? Mine's done 11,000 miles and I swear I can feel a knock/settling when doing stop/start town driving. May be a trip back to the dealers shortly.

Oh yes - There is a wealth of material on these boards about the rear shock problem certainly with the 2002 - 2003 models.

This is a recognised design fault - The stock shock will continue to fail for the life of the motor. It's worse on the passenger side (left in UK) for some reason.

I have had mine tested though, at the dealership (reliable 1) and at an MOT centre and I asked them to specifically check these thoroughly. They were able to produce graph's of the rear shocks performance and both were fine.

So from a performance point of view the motor should be fine however it's very difficult to live with. Infuriating actually.

I'm more concerned about what any prospective buyer will think. I mean if this 2002 STI had've have been knocking and banging and settleing on stop and go during my test drive I wouldn't have bought it! Just my luck mine started within about 1000 miles of buying it (34k miles).

It's driving me nuts!
The vibration that occurs on certain roads is ridiculous, it starts at the back and unstettles the car at the front, I can feel it really well.

I had my rear shocks swapped (03 WRX Wagon) at 45k just over a year ago. Now at 68k and fine. If/when they go again i won't be putting standard ones on. Fronts never been a problem.

Had rears changed under warranty on my 05MY and 06MY. Dealer was excellent on both occasions.

Failures were at about 20,000 miles.

My friend's car an mine (07 WRXs) both have a knocking sound coming from the front left when going over speed bumps at slow speeds. I have been told these are the coils of the spring touching. The car drives absolutely fine. Springs are the prodrive ones and the rears do have some plastic rubber around the coils but the fronts don't. Is this something to worry or not?
Thanks for the help
