Optimax , now known as Shell V Power is 99 RON. Tesco stuff is the same RON. Some Shell stations sell Super which is 97 RON.

I read on here ages ago that Optimax was refined at 98.9 Ron, V-Power is refined at 99.4 Ron; but Tesco 99 has additives added to get it to 99 Ron (hence why it's cheaper)??

Give it a go, and if your car runs ok on it then fine.
For some reason some cars run better on Shell some on Tesco.

Read a petrol test somewhere and Tesco 99 came out very well, but the test went on to say that V-Power has certain detergents and other additives that make it a better fuel for long term engine life.

Their summary even mentioned Subarus and suggested that if you wanted to use Tesco 99 you should maybe only use it every other tank and keep to V-Power otherwise.

Not sure how they can come up with those sort of conclusions and for the life of me can't remember where I read it either.

Tesco 99 and V-Power are the same price where I am. I used to use Tesco but got caught out by their fuel contamination, so have been using V-Power ever since

I find I get about 30ish more miles to a tank using v-power so that removes any slight price difference!

IIRC,

All the oil companies have arrangments to supply each other in those locations where they do not have a refinery or storage. eg Esso is Fawley and Shell in Stanlow. You can probably assume that whatever you fill up with (branded or supermarket) will have come from the closest refinery.

Therefore the only difference that can exist between the brands of petrol is the additives that are put into the fuel before it is sold.

The only exception to the above is V-Power which all comes from the Shell refinery in Stanlow.
