Default Is there an easy way to spot PPP?

Hi,

As the title suggests - is there an easy way to spot a 2002 WRX STi that has the PPP fitted?

Hi mate what do you mean by spot one
If you are trying to buy one look on Piston Heads or ask on here!
If you are looking out for them on the road its quite hard they will have a Prodrive back box though but that does not account for the whole kit.

Spot as in a seller states yes it was fitted, but no proof to back it up.

So, tell tale signs etc

The PPP Pack would have had to be purchased if it was put on afterwards - so am surprised that the seller has no details of this?

This should give you some background on PPP pack:

The seller should have a certificate supplied with the car, exhaust is changed at the rear (Prodrive stamped on the top). On the WRX they change the intercooler hoses - not sure if they do on the STi but they are a different colour

On the STi they also fit an uprated fuel pump but you'll not spot that so easily

they dont change the intercooler hose on sti, but you should get a certificate stating it has ppp. also like someone has said the back box will have prodrive on and on my 05 sti i have prodrive stickers under the side indicators.

if in doubt ring subaru with reg and they can tell u

A dealer with a "black box" will be able to access the ecu !

Just in-case you are really paranoid.

Or just see how low the fuel consumption is !

LOL

Fuel consumption is often said to be marginally better with PPP - more torque = less right foot needed i guess

Not as part of the PPP. The Prodrive bugs with the nice front bumpers were something completely different

i think you're right - but only on the STI's. Otherwise only obvious sign on an STI is the backbox, but this could easily have been added without the car actually having PPP. If no certificate for it, Subaru should be able to tell you quickly enough if you give them a bell

Easiest ways to spot PPP:

1) Check certificate provided by Subaru/Prodrive as proof of fitment

2) Check for small silver sticker, usualy near door on drivers side stating that PPP is fitted, with increased BHP and to declare to insurer.

3) Check back box, this should be stainless, around 3" with "Prodrive" written on it.

4) Under bonnet check for blue silicon hose to intercooler which should have Prodrive written on it.

I never had a sticker.

The 02 STIs didnt change the hose.

...And I've got a certificate, but no-longer got the car - any offers?

Quite difficult I would say: -
The fuel pump is much noisier that you would expect for a "normal" car when you first turn the ignition(that's one clue, but is relative I guess)
The downpipe looks different, but I couldn't tell you how.
The standard 02STI had a real power deficit below 3700rpm, whereas with PPP power was strong from just over 3000rpm.

On the STi PPP downpipe it's covered in a sort of woven heat protective material insteard of metal shielding
