Default Miserable mechanics

Why do some garage owners always sound like they're just doing you a favour by taking your money?

Having phoned a couple of hours in advance, I've just dropped off 2 wheels with old tyres and 2 nearly new tyres to replace them at my local independent exhaust/tyre fitters. It's 2 o'clock in the afternoon, they've got no work on and the tyre-fitting bays are completely empty. All the miserable proprietor could say was:

"Oh, those type of tyres are buggers to get off and on, you know....we won't make it a priority job, as we'll try and fit it in between other jobs, blah, blah"

I only go there because he's just round the corner and I've used him 3 times now (inc. 4 new tyres from him and exhaust fitment for the Scoob), so it's not as if I don't put any business his way, but he really has no idea how to treat his customers!

I only hope he does a decent job and it doesn't end up costing too much.

What's the betting I end up with 2 scratched rims and a "it's-not-my-fault-mate" shrug of the shoulders when I go round later to pick them up?!

odds on I'd say mate - I had the same sort of attitude last week whilst rining around to sort my crank seal out - proper cocky on the phone, which pretty much made my mind up on where not to take it! One so called "specialist" wouldn't even give me the time of day, just pushed past me and mumbled "I aint got time to deal with you" I wanted to pick up a hammer and smash his face in there and then! I don't think its just the motor trade, but nearly every mechanic I've seen looks like they are on the verge of topping themselves!!

Don't know where you are in Northants but you might want to try Orbit in Rushden. I have had tyres fitted there for the past 10 years and they are always happy to take my money ( ) and are very careful with alloy rims.

Well back now. Thanks Blue by You for the Orbit, Rushden tip. My local is Higham MOT & Tyre centre. They did the job OK with just a bit of scuffed rim. 30 quid. They were the front TRX tyres for my R5T2: I'd picked them up second hand from another owner for ummpence to replace my 14 year old originals. The new price from Michelin is 210 quid each + fitting, so I was trying to put off that wallet-bashing for a later date! My car gets so little use that the tyres degrade with age sooner than wearing out the tread.

I find the guys get a lot more interested when you point out that you don't need a receipt
