Default Whats an up pipe???

Hi as it says above really looking in to some mods on the exhaust and keep seeing this up pipe thing
Is it worth doing?
Is it an easy job?
Are there any negatives points changing this part?
Is £100 a good price?
Forgot to say scoob is a 2006 STI. Cheers Gonzo

As you've got an STI, then no, you don't need to do anything. You currently have a straight through (decat) uppipe as standard. The newage WRX's had cats in their uppipes, which a lot of people change for a decat pipe.

I had mine done this weekend as the standard WRX uppipe was blowing

So, save you're £100 and spend it on something else

Greatgonzo - your up pipe connects to the manifold/header then onto the bottom of the turbo.

Wiley - I've been looking into this for my WRX. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that if you had a sports cat in the downpipe, decat center and decat up pipe, that would pass an MOT. Talking of downpipes, did you manage to get any photos of your new one out of the wrapping I mentioned in your thread thanking Scoobyworld?

sorry buddy, didnt have time to take a pic of the downpipe. but i will soon as i need to sort something out.
might need to get a decatted up-pipe too then, if this don't effect the MOT,
i do recommend the ninja downpipe, i've noticed already an improvement in performance even without remapping it. plus the sounds now is immense

yes you will still pass an mot with a decat uppipe

Its a bit of a pig to change as i found out at the weekend (or rather a mechanic i know did ). I had a wrapped STI uppipe fitted to my WRX, but had some other heatshield issues as one of the surrounding shields bolts onto the uppipes own heatshield (which i took off....). Still, all sorted and took probably 4 hours with the car on ramps and a proper garage full of tools! Main issue was seized bolts, especially on the turbo heatshield which just wouldn't budge.

You'll also need to bridge a resistor over the pins in the EGT sensor socket but its easy to do. I used one of these resistors:
NEW: 10 x Carbon Film Resistors 1/4 Watt 2K2 ONLY 19p on eBay, also Passive Components, Components Supplies, Electrical Test Equipment, Business, Office Industrial (end time 14-Oct-08 13:09:11 BST)
and so far, no CEL

I think the up pipe is the one coming out from the turbo and the manifold to turbo pipe is the header pipes.

Yup, It's the one on the underside of the turbo that drops down to the headers (manifold) .

Thanks, thought it was that way. My mates a mechanic an we were arguing about it.
My uppipe has a small blow an is getting changed next monday but he was saying it's the downpipe thats the problem.

An we know which pipe it was just wasn't sure on the name of it.
