Default differences between a k reg wrx & a m reg wrx

hi all, i have the m reg wrx saloon 260ps model with mods tsl group n back box, tsl decat centre section, hks panel filter & polar performance ecu think im need of new coil packs though as it misfires abit high up the rev range, my friend has a k reg wrx saloon far as i can make out thats the 240ps model with mods hks green induction kit, unknown back box, decat centre section, short shifter nothing else as far as hes aware, ive drove his before & been passenger loads & his just feels alot more responsive & smoother & slightly more torque lower down the rev range anyone any ideas why? do they use the same gearbox turbo etc? ive asked him to have a look at the ecu just curious what it has in it

What fuel do you run your car on?
The differences are in the ecu, I take it yours is a MY95 model? as just saying M reg (94/95) is a bit vague

sorry yes mine is a my95, i run mine on tesco 99 as does my mate & i always reset the ecu if change the fuels, if his has a different ecu wouldnt it be using less boost abit less than the z4 ecu i had & alot less than my new polarperformance ecu im running now 1.1bar im just really curious why his feels the way it does compared

All Scoobies are different.

My car makes more power at 1 bar of boost, than my mates did at 1.5bar, similar mods and same turbo.

open his ecu and check there's not a map chip in it, I've come accross quite a few that have.

think ill be more happier when ive put some new coil packs in as these are probably worn out & hopefully cure the misfire at high revs & generally run better as ive already replaced the plugs to 7bs with no luck, one thing i didnt mention is the gearbox is different sounding to mine maybe a possibilty its been upgraded some where along the line to a sti box

Have a look at the gearbox codes. On the passenger side near the starter motor. Should both be TY752 cased boxes.

Or maybe one box is on it's way out?

If it's mis-firing that'll be the problem. Sort that and I'd bet that would also sort the lack of power. If you have not done this lately then: Change the plugs and double check the gaps are all spot on, 0.7mm. Check every coil pack for splits and cracks. I can't remember which tuner it was but one of them even recommended fitting new coil packs in cars with higher miles.

EDIT: And I'll eat my hat...!

ive upgraded the plugs to 7bs & was recommended to gap them to 0.65, i did check they coil packs but they looked ok to me no cracks or anything but like ive been told they'll probably be very worn, i didnt have a misfire with the z4 ecu it just wasnt very responisive & hesitated, now with the polar perfomance ecu it doesnt seem to hesitate but still not overlly responsive but is better but now misfires under heavy boost which is sounding like the packs from what ive read & advice on here

If plugs have been done then you are probably right, the coils may need looking at. I presume you have also checked all of the boost pipes and hoses?

If all that gets done and there is still hesitation I'd whack it on a rolling road and have all the readings checked out. It'll just need some TLC (oh and a lump of cash!).

yes mate ive had all the pipes off the solenoid, turbo etc & sprayed through with brake cleaner, although i did notice the bottom pipe off the solenoid which goes onto the bottom of the resonator chamber wasnt fixed very well ,somebody has broke the mold fixing off the bottom where the pipe attaches & put a peice of copper pipe into the hole loose & pushed the pipe onto it propper bodge job

That pipe shouldn't make any difference as long as it is connected to the boost solenoid and has the restrictor inside. You could just vent that to air block the hole in the resonator.

Not sure if you know this.

The coil packs break down under the rubber tips. You have to peel them off to check.
