My Subaru Assist is coming up for renewal again, but as I have 2 cars, 1x Impreza Sti and 1x Daihatsu YRV turbo was looking at saving some money and looking at a breakdown recovery firm that I can cover both cars with. The Daihatsu is my main driver during the week and the Impreza is the weekend car. Anyone recommend a reputable breakdown firm that will cover both?

Don't get me wrong have no issue with Subaru Assist, and up-to now have not had to use them, but they only cover the Subaru.

Never had to use Subaru Assist. I've got RAC personal cover for the wife and I on her car. Covers either of us in any car as driver. One big thing to look for when shopping around is accident recovery. Many slightly cheaper quotes offered this service, however, you paid the recovery agent, then recover the loss via a third party. I'd rather pay the extra few quid and not worry. Don't pay the first price they quote you either. I just renewed and a 2 min phonecall resulted in a £43 discount. Bob

 

I have RAC Solution 4 (Think that covers everything so long as I am in the car). Can also be used to recover someone elses car I believe, again so long as I am a passengerin their car etc.

DONT go for Subaru Assistance. They are ****! My clutch went on the car 2 weeks back today. I used my RAC plan to recover and take the vehicle home. I then told Subaru Assist about the nature of the problem. They said they would get someone to come and diagnose the problem before they decide if it needs recovering etc, just as RAC diagnose it and then recover it if needs to be recovered.

They didn't bother sending anyone to diagnose it. They just took the car 70 miles away to Holdcroft Subaru and lent me a ****ty old Focus for 2 days. When I was told that the car will take longer to fix I was informed by Subaru Assist/Avis that I am liable to pay the extra days' charges for the hire car although it was beyond my control. You wont get a like for like car either. They dont do performance cars.

I told them to bring my car back just like they took it away and told them that I will get the job done down a crappy old back alley garage. They refused to bring it back, unless I wanted to pay to bring it back! Basically they will only recover your car and take it one way, and that one way is always to a Subaru garage. You know how much these subaru garages charge so you might as well take it to a back alley garage and dont inform Subaru Assist or else your warranty will be void.

 

Personally I would stick with RAC, I have called subaru assist out once and didn't think the guy that came out was that great, they cover loads of cars and the guy that came to me took great delight in telling me that the only time subarus go wrong is as soon as you modify them blah blah. As you can probably guess he couldn't help me

me, my mum and dad all have RAC personal cover, beleive it's covers us on any car at all. Always handy, My mum has had to use it when the head gasket went on her polo. And think my old man used it a while back when out with a mate and his car went (he pretended he was driving his mates car) I've not had to use it yet luckily but it seems a pretty good service.

 

AA - have joint roadside relay cover for me and the wife, discount through SIDC, renewal was about £90... Never had a problem with them, top notch.

 

I am with the AA and have never had a problem with them, as far as i know its the member that is covered so you can drive any car and call them if you have a problem?

Um toss up between AA and RAC it seems. Are Greenflag any good?

One thing I seem to recall is that subaru assist have a low loader if your car is off the road. One thing I'm slightly worried about is that my Impreza is modified with a lowering spring kit etc..
Any views?

 

I've had Greenflag cover on a new car a few years back. They didn't cover re covery after an accident though, which put me off renewing it when the cover expired. Thats when I went to RAC. Bob

 

Not sure if this answers your question as my technical ability is zero but because your car is 4wd it cannot be towed away it has to be transported ie all 4 wheels off the ground.

I've been with AA, Greenflag and RAC. AA were good for years, but they put their prices up a lot a few years ago, so I changed to Greenflag. Had the misfortune to use them twice and they weren't impressive either time. Now with RAC and having used them recently (failed MAF, CEL on), they were prompt and efficient, diagnosing it and taking me to the local stealer.

 

whenever I have called the RAC I always felt confident that they knew what they were doing, I cant say anything for the AA as I've never used them but have heard good things from those I know who have, The subaru assist guy didn't give me that confidence, which is why I'll stick with the RAC

 

LIke I said, I've never had to use it (and I've only just got my scooby and don't want to put this theory to thetest) but with the RAC I have 'return to home' cover on our policy, so if they can't fix it, surely they will have to get a flat bed truck out to you and get you home?? Might be something to ask when you phone for quotes etc.

 

I don't believe thats true.

It can still be towed, but so long as all four wheels are on the ground.
