Crashed my scooby, should i get it sorted through insurance?
Had a bit of an off moment over the weekend when i hit a slippery patch on the road.
No other cars/people/animals were involved, just me and a concrete post.
I declared the accident to my insurance company and they say they will arrange to have it taken to a repair centre and assessed.
My friends are telling me to ring my insurance company back and tell them i would like to deal with the repair myself. I do know a body work guy who could sort me out. Going through insurance will mean i'll have to pay a £250 excess and my insurance premium will go up when renewal time comes, and i stand the risk of having the car recorded as a cat D.
What would you do? Cancel the insurance claim and repair privately or just let the insurance co get on with it?
I would ideally like to get the car back on the road.
Thanks.

Not sure how old you are? This would play a big part in claiming or not. Looking at the pics your body shop guy should have no probs repairing it. If you go this way then money out of your pocket now my save you ££££ in the long run.

I'm 28 and have full NCB (not protected though), so a claim would set me back to 3 years NCB. I have never made an insurance claim before.
I think a claim stays on your record for 3 years.

i personnaly would not go through insurance. dont really know why, i suppose i just like to keep a clean record. fair enough it will cost you to do it but how much will the premium go up and then you have to build up your no claims again. its a lot less hassle then waiting for them to come and assess it and sort it all out.

I'm getting tempted to cancel my claim now.
Yep it's a real sti. Also, being a jap import i don't know how the insurance company would value it. Not sure if it would be listed on Glass' guide etc and they might just take a UK spec car valuation?

you already told them so you will have to declare an accident every renewal anyway even if you don't claim its a **** but they got a record of it now that alone will put ur premium up as ive reciently found out insurance companys never loose.
My Mrs stacked my sti 2 weeks ago i need to put some pics up wrote it off and im still arguing with the insurance company there 1st offer was horrendous

If the cost of the repairs means nothing to you then don't bother with insurance. Otherwise why lose a wad of cash?? Get the insurance to do it, using a bodyshop of YOUR choice. That won't be a write off.
Your premium MAY go up next year, it's not a given, esp as you have NCB and no other claims. If it does go up it won't be that much, and the increase will be alot less than shelling out yourself for the repairs anyway. That repair job will be at least a grand I would of thought, so it's a no brainer to me, to go through the insurance.

Cancel the insurance claim IMHO and get a letter of confirmation saying they have canceled your claim! or it will be a error and will stay on the system and you still get charged anyways.
The damage don't look that bad anyways and i am sure you can put it right for under your excess!

Well when they say "have you had any accidents or claims in the last 5 years" and you state a falsehood to them, whats the point in paying your insurance, you have just invalidated it
Though curbing a wheel for instance wouldnt be classed as an accident, even if you bent the driveshaft, but a nasty front end crash where the car "may" need a jig???

If you fail to tell your Ins Co what you should (and you know what you should be telling them) and it later transpires that you have deceived them, they may choose not to pay out on a claim that you lodge with them (and who can blame them).
Think very, VERY carefully before you start to tell porkies or decide not to admit to what you should.

I had a similar front end in my Fiat a few years ago, cost me 1500 plus parts at a decent back street bodyshop
chassis on mine needed jigging and a chassis leg (i think it was) replacing
did a good job
yours doesnt look quite as bad as mine did, your chassis should be okay
get a quote, you could prob source the parts off here

As you have already reported it your insurance will go up, mine did this year as someone hit me then drove off. The police caught them and we settled it out side the insurance. it wont go down as a claim but an incident, which then they say, puts you at a higher risk than other drivers. mine went up £100 this year because of this!
Wish i new then what i new now!

Just let the insurance company sort it out, thats what you pay them for, especially now you've told them, you can't go back. When it comes to renewal time next year, and they say " have you any accidents or claims sir" you're going to look a bit silly when you say NO, and they say "but what about this accident you reported last year sir" there'll just tell you to **** off and try and get insurance elsewhere (which you'll struggle to do, once your excisting insurance company have told every other company on the insurance database that you had an accident, but then tried to lie about it!), just put it down to experience!

Just been to pick the car up from my mates place. It seems to drive fine, no leaks or overheating.
I've decided to repair the car myself and get a carbon bonnet and maybe a 22b bumper. May aswell make the best out of a bad situation

an insurer would not repair that car imho, 1998? worth £3000-£4000?
get them to cat d the car and ask for a cash in lieu offer so you can keep the salvage and have it repaired yourself. with the money left you can put it towards a 1999 spec front end and keep some for next years increase in premium
