Evo VII - Discuss

Looks Lardy from the front 3/4 view.
Spoiler looks like a revamped STi one and
the front a little like the new mondeo.
BUT it's still better looking than the MY01. It'd probably look better in a dark colour

At the end of the day, the Evo7 is one fugly car. The reason people think it's better than the MY01 is because the lights aren't quite so ugly. Evo7 lights + MY01 is starting to get towards being acceptable. The rear of the Evo7 is even worse than the rear of the MY01.
I think the Evo6 looks a lot better, though I understand the plastic bits start to look a bit saggy after a while (gravity gets us all in the end).

Not such a radical change in the design as the Scoob, but a noticable change none the less!
Not sure if it's the camera lens / angle, but the car does seem to be oddly proportioned - the front doors seem *way* too long, and the back lights appear to be half-hidden by the back bumper.
Still, the basic shape is there, and I'm sure we'll soon get used to it. (did someone write that about the MY01??!)

James,
I disagree, I think most "old car" drivers were really looking forward to a new model that would take the best bits, and re-package them in a better model. Its just not happened.
Take handling (of the old model), on the road youve got to be well past legal speeds to approach a challenge (most of the time).
The new model isnt as fast, and the figures to 100 look quite distressing. As has been said, its not much better than a hot hatch.
Its not got a distinctive shape that the old one had, and it looks like its on stilts. It really does look like a hybrid of a corolla and a hyundai.
They have imporved areas, but they are mainly areas that would be seen by most current impreza owners as more of a nice to have, not a trade off against the strong points of the old car.
Im sure the yanks will love it tho. Lets face it any performance car looses out, by the time youve stuffed a few of their overfed ***** into it.

Did Mitsubishi and Subaru get together and say how can we ruin the formula of two perfectly good cars?
At least the VII doesn't look quite as bad as the 01 .... the proportions definitely look odd ... but is that just the picture .... but as they've ruined the handling and performance of the VII as well, I guess that leaves us all looking for something new that's raw and good looking and reasonably priced .... any ideas?

I thought the evo 6 was over the top on looks tho!
this has a nice balance IMHO.
Agreed about the fogs and stuff like that, but thats easy to remedy, and this may not be the final final version.
The front does look a little low, but maybe its to do with the new japanese legislation?
100% better than the MY01 IMHO

I'm with Matt on this one - it appears that they've made it look more like the outgoing MY00 Subaru... I think it looks better than the current Evo (sorry Cem ) and also, by default, better than the MY01 Subaru.
Still, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as it were.

Wonder what people's reaction would have been if this had been posted a few months earlier before the new Scoob came out?
It does look a little softer, but I guess they are trying to do the same trick as Subaru. Try and give the car a wider appeal and then (hopefully) come out with some full-on special editions. It does look like lamp clusters have three sets of bulbs, which would suggest that they have incorporated driving lamps into the main light cluster. I would hope that they would bring back the big fogs in later editions. At the moment it just looks like a standard saloon with a big spoiler tacked on.
I'm sure it is a good car, but I think they will need to make it stand out a bit more.

This is actually pretty close to some of the fake shots that have been floating around the web for a while.
I bought an EVO 6 TME because I didn't like the look of the new one.
It will weight more, probably in the same order as the MY01 but will have the same power as the old one.
Allegedly stiffer for better handling
certainly lost a lot of its aggressiveness.
I personally don't hate it, but it doeesn't make me want one.
cheers

HMMMmmmmmmm......I've seen this car somewhere before????? Oh I know it's sitting on my drive, only thing is my one says Subaru on it.
I quite like it, it's better than the MY01 Scooby. I don't think the styling would stop me buying one like the styling on the new scooby has so the question is how does it drive???

Im a little confused about the motives behind making these sorts of cars more "user friendly".
The original Scooby and Evo 6 are totally uncompromised cars, and the last thing on the manufacturers mind was "hmmm, I wonder if it will be comfortable for long journeys?", they built a performance first car, and that was what I think makes these cars carry their legendary status.
Personally, I think they let the marketing guys have too much of an input after they saw how well the pre '01 Scoob and Evo 6 sold, and they figured if 1000 people liked it as a total street demon, 2000 will like it as a more comfortable, easy to live with street demon.
ts annoying, because there are so many cars that you are basically just chauffered around in, the driving involvement is minimal, but so few cars that you climb into and actually drive, and I for one believe that that is something special in a car, otherwise Id buy a Mondeo and be done with it.
These cars should be LOSING weight, and 0-60 times should evolve, not devolve, grrrrr, this car doesnt look agressive enough, and BTW I saw a new Impreza on the streets, and I once again realised how fortuanate you guys who have the original are, I thought it was a Hyundai until I got close, that rear spoiler is more than a little funny.
Sorry for the rant, but if manufacturers dont stop compromising their "performance" cars for the masses, than us peeps who actually appreciate a car thats blinding to drive, will be left without.

Sorry fellas, but the Evo VII looks pants - saw the footage on Driven last night. It looks loads bigger than the VI and much more familly saloon like! They certainly are after a different market i guess.
Ive just bought a new MY01 WRX and can i say that anyone who has an opinion on its looks should really see the car in the flesh - it looks loads better in real life than in the pictures. OK they could have made it look better - but its not that bad!
I actually prefer the new WRX looks (stands back and awaits flaming responses!!). Its just had a tuff act to follow because you all love your cars so much. Whatever they brought out was going to upset old car shape drivers in some way.

Well I thought of holding on for a VII, but after seeing photos of it, and hearing it was most probably going to be heavier (and there probably slower), got my VI instead. Can't really comment on dynamics until it's released, but the "f*** you" aggressive looks of the VI have been well and truly lost. I can't really say it looks ugly, more just characterless in comparison.

Hahaha! Great move this Cab Forward Design.. not! I'm sure it's more spacious inside, haha. I'm laughing because it's as ugly as an New age Impreza so now the comparison comes down to performance on the road/track. That's nice. Ugly 4 Fashion, the Germans are waaaay behind!

Hi Robski,
I do agree with you on the performance issue - it shouldn't be slower. But as you say its a damn site quicker than most cars anyway. Im not a racer so i wont be losing any battles with other Impreza owners (who will no doubt be trying to make my car look so if they see me in there mirrors!!).
Its certainly not anywhere near as ugly as you say - mines in dark blue and even the girlies i know (who always slagged off the old shape as ugly) think it looks ok - and you cant mess with that!!!! I think it looks great - just might change those headlights for Prodrive carbon fibre ones tho.......!!
The point with the new car is that its addressed a number of issues that prevented some people (me included) from buying one. The interiors loads better and its a nicer place to be in for 90% of the time. It handles as well if not better. It quieter. (ok - so some people want it LOUDER - but you can always buy an exhaust!) I like the safety features and having the AC as standard. I dont like the fuel consumption (how dare they say it get 29 to the gallon - i get 20 so far and im running it in!!).
Have you actually lived with a new WRX for a week like i have? Have you actually driven them back to back on a decent road. If the answers no then are you possibly being influenced by the "Evo" journalists of this world? How many times do you actually thrash the car on a day to day basis? Possibly for 5mins of a 1 hour journey? If so the pluses of the new car outway the performance drop when 9 times out of 10 you wont notice.
I bought the car because it offered thrills and yet was civilised (if you wanted it to be) at the same time. If all you want is a weekend thrash (i.e. un-civilised) then why not buy a Caterham or something extreme like that. I ride sports bikes and theres no way a Subaru can beat the exilleration of that!
Answer me this - if the new car was quicker than the old one (and all the reviews in Evo and Car said so) would anyone be slagging the car off now? I dont think so. They'd be hailing it as the new car of the 'noughties.
We are all very influenced by what we read and form opinions based on those facts. I saw the pictures as you probably did and thought it looked ****e. I wasnt going to buy one. But i went to the NEC and formed my own opinion when i actually saw it in the flesh. It looks way better in the flesh.
As a final comment - i am going to get a PPP to bring it up to speed as soon as one is available!
Cheers for your comments!

James,
I dont use the car on a daily basis, its my fun car. When I use it, probably 75% of the time I am using the performance, as I make sure I take it down twisty roads, or use it on the duals etc when they are quiet.
The interior of any car has IMHO always been VASTLY overstated by the press. I can honestly say that less than 1% of the time I am in the car, I am taking any notice at all of the interior. So which would I rather have my money spent on, interior or mechanicals? mechanicals everytime!!
As far as the girles liking it, and not liking the old model. I rest my case, you couldnt have argued better against your own case than with that comment If I wanted a "girlie" car I would have got a puma or something nice, cute and loveable like that
As I said maybe it handles a little better, but the old one is unbelievable, you just need to get the courage to use it, it took me probably 9 months to really start to believe in the car, its just unreal what it will do. So make the new one handle better, I just wont use it.
It still looks like its on stilts
Tho I must concede, with all the rain we have had this year that might not be a bad thing
"Answer me this - if the new car was quicker than the old one (and all the reviews in Evo and Car said so) would anyone be slagging the car off now? I dont think so." Maybe not, but its not quicker is it, so whats your point!?

Looks better than the MY01 Scoob IMO, but not as good as the pics previously posted on the net with the flared arches, mean front etc. Just like with the Impreza I guess. Why don't the designers who get paid all this money just look at the mock ups on the net for inspiration (unless they do them themselves and then the company chickens out because they're too hardcore). Those designs are usually much better. I guess it must be the new image thing though. Hope the currently mean Skyline doesn't go the same way.....
