Best for tuning from OEM standard.......Bugeye STi, cheap as chips and with an engine and gearbox good for 400 BHP

Apparently so.

Big turbo, aggressive cam timing (apparently - I wouldn't know what aggressive cam timing looked like if it knocked my pint out of my hand and asked my outside)

Although personally my favorite is the STI RA WRC models - the ones with the blue seats.

Not that I'm biased but I'd have to agree..

Mine managed 326 bhp @ 7,500 rpm standard with a decat and k&n - pi55ed off a number of V9 Sti owners and PPP'd UK Sti's who were also running that day.

I dorve about 30 different sti's wrx's in a week when looking for mine travelled 780 miles too.
I couldnt believe the differences between sti's
in the end decided on a JDMsti limited 2002.
have had it mapped with pannel filter and blitz nur spec 342 bhp on crappy french fuel lol..
i thought this was the best engine out of the cars i tested.

since reading up on the model it suposed to have the same cahssis as spec c but same spec as sti also ie air con elec windows ect. with a none roller bearing turbo, same engine as fitted to the s202

so its a bugeye for me.

I had a V5 Sti Type Ra and It was special - I've never owned another Sti but have been In a few and owned an early Wrx and a heavily modded UK turbo and nothing has come close to my Ra. The power, handling, and cross country pace was staggering - It's the only car I've ever owned and wanted back the minute the new owner took It off my drive.

Never heard of a 2002 limited, though there was one for a 2003 car, it had the standard STI chassis, not the spec c one, though it had a roof vent and was in blue with stickers on it but was a blob eye car (the equivelant spec c limited was the only other car to use the spec c chassis and had all electrics etc).

I dont think there is a "best" version, everyone has different tastes so there are cars to suit their needs, I would say mine is a Spec C, someone else may say a type R, someone else a type RA etc.
As for the version 3 STI, yes it was classed as the best classic by the subaru engineers, but that was the classics, and that quote is like 8+ years old

heres a cut of a guide.

2002.06 : The Impreza S202 STi version (400 limited production) and the Impreza WRX STi limited were introduced.
The S202 STi version, based on the WRX STi Spec C 17-in model, is powered by the tuned EJ20 engine that makes 320 horsepower. The Impreza S202 STi versions is equipped with a higher power ECU, a air-intake for competition, an air duct hose, a engine oil cooler, a titanium muffler, rotors with slit, sten-mesh hoses, PIRELLI P-ZERO tires, RAYS wheels, a STi carbon rear spoiler, a exclusive gauge cluster, power window, center door lock, and manual air conditioner.
The Impreza WRX STi limited, based on the Impreza WRX STi, features the Spec C engine (but not ball bearing turbo) that makes 39.2 kg of torque.

sorry my mistake probably wishful thinking

Why didnt you say it was an S202 to start with and it does have a roller bearing VF34 turbocharger, 320ps out of the factory, it is based on the Spec C chassis though has no DCCD, uprated brakes (grooved brembo discs) and rays alloys with a titanium muffler (backbox for us normal people unless someone has binned it ) and an engine oil cooler (very noticable with STI in red normally )
