I think they are referring to the fact that impreza engines dont like the power upping too much. If you play with them and expect too much they will break and they aint cheap to fix.

It always makes me laugh when I talk to guys who have a mate who has an impreza and it has 380 bhp and has been "chipped". Yeah if you like . You only have to speak to some of the guys who have done their cars properly and strengthen everything to realised how much time, effort and expensive is involved and even then things can go wrong . If you want 400 horses buy an EVO/Cossie/Skyline and get a second mortgage. Personally I find 280 ish okay

cheers

chris

If the Impreza had a "time bomb engine" Why do we bother to buy them? Why have they consistently copme top of JD power surveys?

My lay opinion is that the engines are fine, as standard.
Mine lasted 29,000 with free flow exhaust and filter.
Mine lasted 600 miles when a company tried to push their envelop a bit further, of course they were kind enought to point out it was nothing to do with them and the engine is not strong enough to accomodate increased boost

If in doubt get a knock link! and an EGT guage

Cool

I agree with chrisp - you modify your engine - you take the consequences .......... possible unreliable, smashed engines - then IM wont repair free of charge and the moaning appears!! Tut, Tut!!

One of the reports on the Impreza states, 'Very reliable car, the horror stories come from Modified cars' ........... dont you think that if it was possible to produce a 2 Litre, RELIABLE car with 350-500BHP ................. Subaru might have DONE it??? Of course they would!! And I would buy one in all probability!!

Here's a current example and the car was lightly modified, PPP, backbox and induction kit. There have been a few more examples in drivetrain.

I think when "head work" is mentioned people tend to think large valves, ported, gas flowed, high lift etc..... hence the presumtion of mods.

If you're just talking of replacing std valves, there are many high mile Scoobs around. I've driven one with more than 120,000 miles on it, ran and drove perfectly but did need a new steering wheel

Red face

Hmmmmmmmmm......Well my engines still going strong, it's a damn shame that at this moment in time the gear box is in pieces in the local Subaru Emporium !!! Ah well looks like it's just the case of re-machining the linkages and fixing the sprockets ???? How much are we talking guys ??? It's the prodrive quick shift box and they've already started to fix it !!
