auto or not?
had a glance at a scooby today,it was a wrx wagon on a n plate with 88,000kilo which im guessing is around 55,000miles.was up for £2,495 but would take an offer.the only draw back is its an auto!!this would suit the wife so i might have to compromise as it would be the family car.are they any good?performance?economy?anyone got any background info?thanks

2495 is expensive for a wrx auto. they are the least desirale of all the scoobies. dont settle for an auto just cause its the only one youve seen. youll always wish youd brought a manual. £2000 will get you a tidy saloon, manual now if you look about. ive never driven the auto but i would imagine they are slower than the manual and that the scooby experience is not the same.

I've had an Forester turbo for 4 years, automatic cos of a knackered left knee. They have their advantages- in traffic jams , in town, and for lazy cruising, but they are slower, and if I could have a manual, I would!

I drove an auto WRX recently and I loathe autos for the main, but with the WRX I was truly surprised. Have to say I thought the auto box was excellent. You can drive it pretty much as a manual up to a point or use the different settings to hold the revs longer when in Drive etc.
Have a try out in it and see what you think. You just may like it.

All depends on how you drive and what you want.
I have an auto Forester T/tb and it suits me, I like it, others would not go near a car with an autobox. It really is down to personal driving style.

I have a auto wrx and after having tried manuals and autos i must say everyday driving the differnce in speed isn't a issue . The autos hold boost during gear changes and just has relentless acceleration and you don't have any worries about it eating gearboxes like most manuals will.
There is a big stigma about the autos and thats why they never came over here but the people who say there rubbish and are tonned down have proberly never had one. Don't let the manual boys put you off. If you drive in city's or busy traffic you will be pleased about not having a clutch. You can manualy change gear anyway you just have to adjust for the second delay.
My advise is try both and don't be put off .(the price does seem a litle steep in this current climate though)
ps I use mine as a family car and its never let me down
also the look on peoples face's when you beat them in an auto is well worth the stigma

Be aware also that the handling is not the same, the auto isn't a true 4wd like the manual but relies on a clutch pack at the rear of the gearbox to send torque to the rear, most of the time its 90% FWD, not to say you shouldn't try it, but be aware!
