Why do we get the 2.5L and Japan get the 2.0L?

IIRC and flame suit on
Because for the UK & USA markets they can only get Power and lowish emmissions using a 2.5ltr. They cannot achieve anywhere near the same emissions with a JDM 2.0ltr Twin scroll
but I know which i'd rather have or got

From: 1600cc's of twin scroll fun :)
The JDM's deliver their power more like a V6/V8 car than the UK 2ltrs do, and they produce serious ammounts of torque also! and as with Tony, i know which one i would have, and its not a 2.5
Twin scroll all the way!!

No offence meant
I do like, prefer a tweaked 2.5ltr WRX with 5 speed box for the road, rather than a STD 2.5ltr Sti with 6speed IMHO
I prefer the longer speed range of each gear and Torque on a 2.5ltr WRX like I prefer the higher Reving JDM 2.0ltr on a 6 speed box.
Both give good "in gear" speed flexibilty. Thus reducing the need to short shift, hit limiter or even worse change gear during overtaking or when a long open corner.
although a T25 etc is a bit different kettle of fish
UK STi's starts to pull at <2800 but runs out of puff at >6200 giving it a 3400rpm usable rev range
my 2.0ltr JDM starts to pull at <2400 but sadly runs out of puff at >7500 giving it a 5100rpm usable rev range
IIRC IMHO
Tony I've given some rides to peeps with UK's and it does tend to suprise them

In Japan you pay heavy penalties for
a) the physical size of the car
b) the engine capacity
"Acquisition Tax is around 5% of the price of the car." One off cost.
"The weight tax for cars with engine sizes up to 2 litres are about 56,700 yen, greater than that is 75,600." One off cost -
"Passenger cars with a 300 something or 33 in the upper right corner of the license plate (including nearly all US cars) are the highest. A 50-something on the license plate indicates a medium-size car, and the "Kei" cars with an engine of 660cc have a yellow plate and are lowest. The May annual tax for Kei cars is the lowest as well at about 5000-yen, but for larger cars the tax quickly escalates to 34,500-39,500 yen for medium cars to 45,000 yen for 2.5 litre cars and 56,000 yen for 3 litre cars." Yearly cost.
Buying a Car in Japan
Keeping it at 2 litre means more can own it. After all you can't even have a car over there unless you can prove you have a parking space for it!
Got a feeling the 2.5 litre was introduced more for the US market - "lazier" power so to speak.

from what i've read, the americans got the 2.5 engine because they all think bigger is better and therefore sells better, and we got it to reduce turbo lag.
2.5 suits my driving style (an old woman) but most ppl prefer high reving 2.0L models
ive moded my wrx, got 280 bhp and 310 lbs/ft 421NM and its very responsive even in 5th gear at 40mph
