Sti type R vs UK P1?
Just wondering if anyone could shed a little light on this for me...
Presumably there will be someone who has driven the P1 and the STi Type R, which did you think was the better car? I'm currently driving a UK Turbo due to insurance being astronomical on these 2 cars but as soon as they are in my reach price wise I'll be going for one.
I understand that the P1 was released as a UK version of the Type R to combat grey imports and was fairly similarly specced engine wise both around 276bhp. There were some differences gearbox wise aswell, are the STi a knightmare on fuel on motorway cruises due to the gearing being designed for acceleration?
Cheers

Have never driven a Type-R but own a P1 and 22B and I would imagine the 22B and Type-R are pretty much the same car, or very similar, to drive (minus the arches etc.)
The gearing on the 22B is very short so on motorway it will rev a bit higher (not sure exactly what but sure somebody will have noted...) which is also rather noisy if you have decatted....I don't use either much on a motorday as they are not daily drives but when I'm pushing on down back roads etc. I feel the P1 is a lot easier to drive and everybit as fast, if not faster because I feel more planted.
P1 will be far more compliant but Type-R's have more "goodies" . But it all comes down to what you want from your car rather than whats the "better car" they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

From: South Wales, Scoobless, Type R is gone!
My Type R does 80mph in 5th at 4Krpm, my UK Turbo used to do that speed at about 3Krpm.
Type R's are available with longer 5th gears though for better motorway driving.
The Type R has the advantage of stronger rear diff and drive shafts, DCCD and Intercooler Water Spray.
P1 gets longer gearing, ABS
Probably a few other differences but there the first few that come to mind.

I could imagine that the P1 understeers a bit more without the DCCD but I have never driven one. I do love my Type R though since it feels a lot like driving a rwd with the DCCD set to open.

From: Markyate.Imprezas owned:-wrx-sti5typeR-p1-uk22b-modded my00. Amongst others!
Do a search on here. This has been covered zillions of times and always ends in fights! I've owned a 22buk, a V5typeR and a P1 and they each have their qualities and drawbacks.

I loved my P1 though, had it from new, BUT i,m waffling and to answer your question if it were me, i think i,d be swayed towards the TYPE-R just for it few extra gimmicks it comes with AND you,ll PROBABLY PAY LESS FOR ONE..

Cheers for your responses fellas, there is one thing I could do and set out to own them both lol!
STi may just swing it, DCCD sounds a hoot though I think this sways me slightly and look to get the 5th gear ratio changed as this would be my daily driver and I travel a stretch on the motorway, plus don't want those M badge owners annoying me!!
