Default 2.5 or 2.0 STI another newbie question...

Hi..

Again thanks for anwsers previous posts...

I looking to get a STI from an 03 upwards...

Is the 2.5 STI a better car then the 2.0 STI - Is it worth saving extra and buying a newer STI with the 2.5 engine....

Is it really worth holding out for 2.0 with the DCCD ?

When did the 2.5 appear ?

Does it handle as well with the bigger engine ?

And does it still have the scooby sound as thats one of the reasons I want a scooby...

Also if I buy a 2003 STI which is standard how much would it cost to bring it up to PPP spec and what is the difference in torque and BHP.

What do actually get with the PPP pack ?

I live in Essex so I could take it to Extreme scooby for some upgrades

Also I had a 200SX years ago when I put 18" wheels on it the ride became much harsher is the same true with the scooby what size are the standard wheels on a 2003 STI ?

Lots of questions I know..

Cheers

Ian.

The 2.5ltr was introduced to Europe and the US in 2006 (a few even on a late 55 plate). All cars for this market after that date are 2.5ltr.

All Imprezas except the JDM with equal length headers make the traditional burble sound, although it was silenced on later cars but this is easily rectified with a simple and cheap exhaust tweak (i.e. the centre resonator pipe).

DCCD is in all STIs from the blobeye onwards I believe? I may be wrong on that.

The PPP differs with each model so consult the Subaru/Prodrive website for exact things you get. Mainly a remap and a backbox though. On some you get a fuel pump and a sports cat downpipe too. Not worth the money IMHO.

You need to test drive the 2.0ltr and 2.5ltr engines, I'd also recommend you try the JDM twin scroll too as all three are very different and suit different drivers. Other people's opinions are a bit pointless here. it depends on you.

Imprezas intended for the Japanese Domestic Martket. The get a twin scroll turbo. Some prefer this and IMO it is better than the 2.0ltr Impreza you get here. I prefer the 2.5ltr over both though, but as said above that is horses for courses.

JDM = japanese domestic market (a car intended for the japanese only)

twin scroll = a turbo with 2 seperate exhaust inlets, on the scoob one for each pair of cylinders. a more efficient design.

Had a 2l wrx now got a 2.5 sti . The drive is a lot more refined and the low down torque is great .
I prefer the 2.5 but not actually had the 2.0 sti to compare it to .
I think you get a lot more power gain for the money when modding being a bigger engine . Not too much extra bhp but bundle's more torque.

JDM Twin Scroll and if you pick a car imported before 2005 like me then it will be on a PLG tax rate!! Have a read of the thread below.

Twin scroll technolgy is fairly new, but most manufacturers are now embracing it, the cars produce more low down grunt and better top end giving a more progressive power band, more like a V6 than a turbo charged car, some people dont like this way of delivery, it is infact very good, considering you cannot drive around town at 25mph in 5th gear on a 2.5 without it struggling a little, you can with the twin scroll car
The 2.5 is lazier in the way it delivers its power, it has more torque than the 2ltr it replaced, the twin scroll is a better method of keeping a lower displacement but delivering similar torque levels of that of a higher displacement engine.
There are no disadvantages to the twin scroll unit, if anything its a better engine than that which it replaced (similar to the uk 2ltr) and better than the lazier 2.5 (also stronger), but it is horses for courses, some people dont like the smoother delivery, its a 8200rpm screamer, the equal length headers remove the burble but replace it with a bike type sound, really is nice to hear though its recommended to replace the standard filter if you want to free up a bit more umph at the top, they feel restricted after 6500rpm on a standard one

^^^^ Good review Tony

However to call a 2.5 Lazy

The 2.0 is brutal power harsh and a punch in the back and if thats what you want fantastic.

I have a 2.5 with PPP and love it's Linear power it fells like you are being pushed with a jet engine. Different cars and different characteristics.

Both awesome cars though

Yes DCCD is worth having even if you just leave it on AUTO

Historically JDM's normally have all the best "extra's" like engine, lights and rear wipers

2002 STi JDM 2.0ltr Bugeye NO DCCD (except spec C IIRC)
2002 STi UK/EU 2.0ltr Bugeye NO DCCD

2003 STi JDM 2.0ltr Blobeye with DCCD
2003 STi UK/EU 2.0ltr Blobeye NO DCCD

2004 STi JDM 2.0ltr Blobeye with DCCD
2004 STi UK/EU 2.0ltr Blobeye NO DCCD
2004 WR1 earliest UK STi Blobeye with DCCD(2003/4 chassis)

2005 chassis changes, JDM 2.0ltr Blobeye with DCCD upgraded Struts, wheel brgs and wheel PCD's.
2005 chassis changes, STi UK/EU 2.0ltr Blobeye with DCCD upgraded Struts, wheel brgs and wheel PCD's.

2006 STi JDM 2.0ltr Hawkeye with DCCD
2006 STi UK/EU 2.5ltr Hawkeye with DCCD

2007 STi JDM 2.0ltr Hawkeye with DCCD
2007 STi UK/EU 2.5ltr Hawkeye with DCCD

2008 STi JDM 2.0ltr Hatch with DCCD Idrive etc
2008 STi UK/EU 2.5ltr Hatch with DCCD Idrive etc

If i was looking for a Best buy Blob I'd look for a 2003 JDM but would prefer pay a little extra for a 05 model over a 04 model.

I only suggest which ever Year model you go for just look at Spec and Test both a UK and JDM(JAP) cars

IIRC IMHO

Tony, you should add that the JDM cars have a quick rack 13:1 steering over the fast rack of the UK cars

The US has had the 2.5 since 2003 I believe. That's where Iain Litchfield was getting the 2.5 lump from to create the MK1 T25.

It was introduced in Europe to meet the Euro 4 emission regs. The 2.0 unit needed expensive modifications, so that's how we ended up with it.

DCCD was introduced on MY04 JDM cars and MY05 UK cars if I remember correctly.

No, DCCD-A was introduced in 2003 on the JDM cars as per T5NYW list above.
