whatever the parts cost me, im only too aware of just how stupid some "mechanics" or "specialists" are
a place that shall remain un-named left my caliper bolts just done up finger tight and my passenger side caliper fell off at 50 mph, supposed specialits who then told me I must have done work since they had the car as that simply wouldnt happen
It did, the end.

I had mine done a couple of times in a "local specialist" but after he advised me my turbo was on its last legs i thought he was good at his job. But 2.5years down the line and 25.000miles later its still going strong Now i do my own

it's not difficult to change the fuel filter ,takes about 3mins,sparkplugs bit awkward but no great hassle with the right sockets, oil change easy, oil filter very easy, airfilter if needed even easier, wouldnt attempt the timing belt myself and dont know how to replace the brake fluid but guessing its easy enough, same goes for gearbox oil.apart from all the inspection of brake pads etc which is done for the mot and greasing of hinges etc did i miss anything out?
it would be good to have a service write up on the site

A major costs me about 570 quid, and i know that the job has been done properly
If you think i am a mug for getting it done properly, up to you, but when your cambelt snaps/oil pump/big end bearings fail due to bad practices, dont come crying

Depends if you're poor.
Personally I'm rich so I pay someone else to get dirty while I stand around and talk ****e/drink coffee.
If that makes me a mug then fair enough, but I'm a clean mug while you're out in the rain skinning your knuckles.

Akshirly I should change that, I used to work in Dubai but now I work/live in the Caribbean (well I live here for most of the year and spend about 10 weeks a year in the UK).
When I'm in the UK I have a house in the Lake District if that makes you happier

I do my own ... with the exception of the Cambelt.
I could do it, but want to blame someone else if it goes wrong and snaps!
Oil + Filters (Air and Oil) costs me £18 .... and it's done right - no silly things like sensor disconnect - but time and care taken.

A lot on here really don't know one end of a spanner from another ..... not their fault, they just are not of an Engineering mind.
Most are hobbyists .... nowt wrong with that either, but you will read some amazing stories sometimes - the internet spreads claptrap faster than ever before
