I don't think much of the new Impreza, but the new Mazda 3 MPS is starting to look like a good alternative to the new WRX. The new shape one is on Pistonheads currently, looks much more like what Subaru should have made in the first place.

Dealer has recently told me that they are having problems selling them, since MOST people who like the old shapes, HATE the new, and won't buy one.
They are therefore having to try and re-invent themselves with a whole new customer base................and now, no rally car to tie it to.
Subaru to go bust in 2009/10 anyone?

thats close but not quite the truth as far as i can tell, they built the new car "aimed" at a new customer base and it didnt come off, so basically shot themselfs in the foot as they have lost there current group of hardcore enthuasists and failed to sell to the people the car was aimed at

As a long time Subaru fan and having owned a variety of Impreza's I have to admit they have never been 'pretty' cars. I don't think anyone ever bought an Impreza for its looks, especially the bugs.
After I sold my Hawkeye last year I went for a long test drive in a hatch WRX. I would have bought one (despite the looks) if the performance and handling of the car was up to scratch (i.e. as good as, or better, then the Hawkeye). The fact is that it doesn't cut the mustard. The car rolls too much, the steering is odd, with a slightly vague and woolly feel, and the car feels underbraked.
Granted, the STI was better, but not good enough to justify the higher price and running costs IMHO.
Eventually, after trying loads of cars, I was close to getting the Golf GTI. Finally went for a Skoda 2.0T VRS though (mainly because of the extra space coming in handy with three kids). Got it for under £14k on the road, with a load of options. Spent £500 on Revo map taking it to 255bhp. Got a 6-speed box and will do 35mpg on a run and doesn't drop below 25mpg even when really hammering it, plus I'm paying less than £300 a year insurance and its not in the dreaded £400 tax band.
Granted, its a bland looking car and traction is a problem when booting it on greasy roads, and the WRX would be a better buy if you live the wilds of Wales or Scotland. But for most people the current Impreza WRX just doesn't cut it. Subaru should keep the drivetrain but develop the chassis and bodyshell. If they don't do something quickly then they'll be out of business in the UK because Imprezas are just not selling, the new Forester is hardly a hit and the Legacys have always been a bit too 'left field' for most people and sell in tiny numbers.
I will probably get another Imp, but it will be an early Hawk and for use as a weekend car only.
