Got a small rattle - any ideas??
#1
My STI Type R has just developed a small rattle......it's coming from the engine bay & seems to come from the drivers side of the car. Sounds like a loose metal plate tapping on something..... does anyone have an idea on what it could be???? don't do it on tick over only when car is moving!

I suggest you read a few 'Driven' threads and throw it out of your pram
Seriously if its a heatshield then whilst stationary slowly rev the engine througout the rev range and the shield should resonate around a certaim rpm. Usually between 2500 - 3500 rpm. Check the little heatshields on the exhaust manifolds/headers, you can get to them from underneath the car - they sit between the bumper and the engine. There are more heatshields around the turbo area too. Usually a bolt has come loose causing it to rattle.
Good luck!

Does sound like a heat shield. Try tapping the turbo heatshield to see if it's rattling a little. Then getting under the car and looking at the exhaust ones. If you have a plastic sump guard that might be a little tricky!

I had a rattle coming from the front left engine area bit. The local dealer fixed. It was the springs that stop the brake pads vibrating that had come lose on the front left. Bloody loud rattle especially with the windows down.

If it happens between 2500-3500rpm, then it's the brake lines vibrating against the bulkhead. Look at the back of the engine bay, dead centre at the top, find the fuel lines running across the bulkhead and either bend them away slightly or put a bit of masking tape around them.
Did it for me, and numerous others too
