Question DVLA laws regarding registration

I have just seen a car for sale on eBay, which is an import Subaru. Its on an M Plate but the owner claims it to be a 51 plate. You surely cant put a newer plate on a car, as its not representative of its actual age.

My experience with imports is the manufacture date is often unknown or stated on a v5 and is given a plate to match. The 1st registered date is often newer than the registration but this dont cover you to fit a newer plate??

Anyone else seen this on cars for sale? I maybe wrong but I'm sure I aint.

My understanding of the law is you can put older plates on a car but not newer.

Sounds about right (what you've said)

Date of first registration may make it an 01 car but it will go on the date of manufacture which will be mid 90's and no he can't claim it to be a newer car or put an 01/51 plate on it.

5t.

Item number: 320341468843 if anyone wants to see. I thought it was wrong.
It may well be the owner has mis interpreted the v5.

Your all right you can't make a car newer, but I have seen this a couple of times before. The DVLA are only human and do make mistakes. A friend had a Lexus that should have been a 1990 G and the DVLA put that on an R reg making it 8 years newer. This has obviously happen with this car.

Reg plate should be based on date of first registration in Japan, not when it left the factory, thats what is on the V5C document that issues the plate age, you then have another date on the V5C which states first UK registration date, thats what your road tax banding is based on.

It's the same for a UK car, Reg plate is based on date of registration, not when it was built.
