Thanks, guys.
I was just concerned as I saw an advert for an STI that said that the engine had been replaced as it had 'reached its rebuild mileage', and wondered that perhaps STI's need much more servicing than WRX's?

Not really, in fact the later classics can be more prone to failure if they're not remapped for UK fuel.
Newer cars (ie. 01 onwards) do seem to be better, you don't hear of as many rebuilds. I know the later crankshaft allows the big end bearings better lubrication.

Remapping the ecu to run UK fuel, they are mapped for 100 ron fuel, so higher octane than we get over here, you can have the ecu map "remapped" to run on a lower octane fuel making it safer for the engine.

i should have had mine remmaped a long time ago, i've been wondering if the failure happens suddenly , or is it a case of damage is done over time then eventually it goes bang?

So if you get the ECU remapped, presumably is alters how rich the engine runs, and perhaps ignition timing, for the lower octane rating of UK fuel?
I though an ECU reset did the same thing, by removing the car's memory of Japanese petrol? Why pay the extra to get it remapped?
Maybe I am being thick, can someone explain? Ta!

The ECU in the car comes with a map from subaru that it was given in the factory. On the later of the classics this was mapped for 100RON fuel, whihc is available in japan. In the UK we only have 99RON at best and so the map will run lean and the ignition timing may be a little agressive. I think the ECU does have some ability to detect knock and pull the timing but its not very good. Getting it remapped will allow the mapper to adjust the air/fuel and timing to a suitable level for UK fuel.
I've just bought a sti5 and am currently running on tesco99 with octane booster until I get it ready for a remap. You should also see more power after a remap.
