Default Service 30k ouch

My smile has just been wiped out lol ringing round this morning for service costs for 30k service , shrewsbury £457 and stourbridge £455. wow Shrewsbury did include an engine and fuel flush clean. I may take it to my trusted mechanic experienced guy 45plus works alone cracking mechanic who I know works on scoobys, is it a must to have the main dealer service it , I recon I would get a better job done my my mechanic?

That's not too far off for a main dealer service. Remember SIDC membership might well see that drop 10% immediately so it will pay for the cost of the membership - everything else you get is a bonus.

The 30k service is bigger than the cambelt one which many people don't realise.Even private specialists can quote £400 for it.

I think its the spar plug change that bumps the price up

Yours is a 2004 STI that has done 30k

It's 5 years old this year and should really be getting the 50k/5 year service which is the cambelt one.
30k is expensive as it's the major fluids service and you should be getting the transmission fluids changed at this point.

What do you know about the service history?
Do you have lots of stamps in the book and receipts?
If you do not know it's history, I would personally do the 30k service and the cambelt change just so that I have peace of mind and know that it has decent oil in it and the cambelt is sorted.

No problem using an independent mechanic, have a chat with your man and see what he has to say and how much he will charge!

Agreed, excellent point. The cambelt isn't actually labour intensive and the part isn't too bad either if you don't have the tensioner. 50k service should be £300 but you'll be gettign everything else done anyway so they shouldn't jack the price up.

30k service is trans/gear oil
diff oil
plugs
coolant etc etc as sosbanite says it is the major fluid change.
