When is a low mileage car not a low mileage car ?
#1
Answer: When its a Subaru.
I bought an MY99 UK Wagon in July last year from a Subaru dealer. Only 10768 miles on the clock. It now has 16000 miles on it. I phoned 2 dealers about a service. The first said the car needs the 45000 mile service because of its age and the second said it needs the 30000. It is now booked in for the 30000 (£450) service but I am not sure what will be stamped in the service book because the 22500 service has effectively been missed out.

Mate, they're taking the ****! If a car like yours does a very low mileage IMHO it needs the oil changes, but it certainly doesn't NEED the cambelt changing or brake pads etc. Do you care about the Subaru service record? If not, suggest you seek out a local specialist and get their advice / service.

Cambelts have rubber in them, or something that perishes. I'd be more concerned about getting that done than the 30k service. At 30k, spark plugs are changed along with all fluids. At 45k it's cambelt.
It is an ****. I've just had the 30k service on my 20k car.

I want the service history to be as complete as possible. My view on the Cambelt is that if it snaps the car is under warranty. It is going back to the dealer I bought it from for the 30000 miles service and I will pay to extent the Subaru warranty at the end of my 1st year of ownership.

Beau, yes, the cambelt will be under warranty, but only if you keep the service history up to date!
I agree that it's a pain to do low mileages, but the chances are that a low mileage car will have a lot of 'bad' miles (stop/start/urban driving) compared to good (motorway) miles. Cars over here in Guernsey may have low mileage, but components like clutches gearboxes and brakes wear out much sooner than a motorway cruiser.

If anyone wants me to do some motorway miles for them, so that your service history and servicing is far less complicated I am willing to swap my Turbo Wagon with you for a week at a time?
currently doing upto 1000miles a week... currently 94,000miles on the clock... doh!
Glad they are damn solid motors...
Cheers
JGM
PS: My car is slightly out of sink on the mileage as the previous owner didn't use it much for about a year and so was serviced on time rather than miles and at 92k it had a 97500service.

In the same boat as JGM, UK300, new July 2001, 19K on the clock, serviced 3 times, £450-500per month on fuel....
Jesus thats a mortgage...
Should be like BMW with that mileage countdown system that adjusts to your driving style. Maybe.

Always suspicious of BMW type system. Local dealer having a lean month, BMW send signal via satellite to turn on service light in dash, irrespective of cumulative driving time. Only dealer can turn off lamp £££kerching

Seems like there's a few of us in the same boat.
I bought my MY99 in September last year. 17.5K miles on the clock. I've now clocked up 22.5K. (Mr average I suppose)
Luckily for me, the previous owner has had the Scoob serviced on the dot every 6 months, but I was still unsure what service I should go for now ... 30K, 45K ???
After seaking advice on this BBS and from various dealers, everyone said "get the 3 year service done. CAM belts and major fluids".
So that's what's happening next week, and an MOT. £450 + MOT + the cost of any thing that fails! (please pass, please)
Out of interest ...
a) my rear pads sound like they need changing (grinding noise when braking) is this the normal life of a rear pad on a MY99, 22.5K miles/3 years ?
b) as the MOT is due on the 18 March, but I'm having it done on the 7th March, could I claim on the warranty for anything 'major' that fails? ... or am I dreaming again ;-)
Cheers everyone.

I had a cambelt snap on a Toyota MR2 Turbo... car had done 48,000miles and was 5years old. Was planned to be changed when miles reached 50,000...
So age does have a bearing but 2years should be fine...
Thankfully the Toyota engine was a non-contact engine and did no damage despite snapping at 95mph
I'd be inclined to run to the miles only and perhaps change the cambelt every 3years... IMHO you'd be fine with that and buying a car with service history like that I'd be fine with it. Obviously if you have warrentee then you have to run to what they specify.

Same for mine, is going in for its 60k service having only done 40k. Previous owner had it serviced every 6 months and has stamps showing much lower mileage for each service than the book advises.

I would get the MOT a few weeks before the warranty expires, and you should be able to claim on the warranty for any non wear and tear items that fail.
Drawback is that the MOT will only run from when it is carried out, not the date when it is due, inlike in later years when it runs from when it is due. Timing is everything.

You can still get an MOT done I think it is upto 30days before it expires as you are not suppose to drive with it expired etc...
and the new certificate will be written starting from when the old one expires if you hand them the old one for proof etc..
That is what I did with mine only last month.
Cheers

Answer: When its a Subaru.
I bought an MY99 UK Wagon in July last year from a Subaru dealer. Only 10768 miles on the clock. It now has 16000 miles on it. I phoned 2 dealers about a service. The first said the car needs the 45000 mile service because of its age and the second said it needs the 30000. It is now booked in for the 30000 (£450) service but I am not sure what will be stamped in the service book because the 22500 service has effectively been missed out.
