Got told off for buying to much E85
As above took a trip to wellingborough today as i normally do in my dodgy old escort van armed with 4 x 20litre jerry cans. Its about a 60mile round trip for me so i like to get plenty. As im just about to finish filling the fourth can a stroppy woman from morrisons gave me a good telling off about how im breaking the law and its a two can maximum.
She then went on to tell me that my reg number had been taken and i wouldnt be allowed to buy it again.
So just a freindly warning, they are getting hot on how much you buy in cans and the type of cans used.
I think ive got a solution for myself, But dont be suprised if you go armed with cans and dont get what you want.

I think its there rules a lot of the time.....but i am sure i read somewhere that the max you can carry leggaly without a hazchem sticker or something like that was 2 5litre or 1 20 litre can at any 1 time...nothing to stop you fitting a extra tank into the back of your van as long as the tank(lorry fuel tanks are good)is bolted down securlery to the floor and has a proper cap..the cap dont need to be a locking type.....

thats exactly what i intend to do. i only really use the van to keep a few tools in and store my e85. im going to buy a tank from a scrappy with filler neck and cap. bolt it in the back and cut a hole in the side for the filler neck. then i just turn up and fill the tank in the back through the filler neck from out side. I may even look into an old lorry tank because there normally a more squareish shape so easier to fit in and maybe more capacity 200litre maybe.

Me and my brother had this problem in Dundee, he told use we were only allowed 1 20litr jerry can, they never banned us though, that's harsh. I suppose there's nothing stoping you buying 1 can then paying, driving round the block then filling up another, and so on and so on........

I went down this route as well and was told be her the same rules applied to E85 as to unleaded because according to her E85 contained unleaded. This again i refuted as it would then not be a bio fuel.
although i dont know whether it does or doesnt have a touch of unleaded in it?

Nope i was told only 2 cans, although it wasnt mentioned to me how big or small the cans had to be. she was also checking they were petrol approved cans.

If she was polite and had just made you aware why you couldn't buy the amount you required that would have been fine, but I wouldn't have taken a telling off like you described from a woman that works in a garage.

I agree. im happy to be made aware of the rules. It was the marching up behind me with a face like thunder telling me what a bad law breaker i was that offended me.

if you put an orange hazchem sticker on the front and back of your van, put a fire extinguisher in the footwell and you can carry up to 800ltrs (4 barrels) without an adr licence

You are also required to have an emergency action plan, which will basically say in the event of a spill, call 999 then the environent agency. just print it out on a bit of a4 and keep it in the glovebox.
