I am a biker...
As a biker - i've stolen this to pass around.
It would be nice to see this thread left here in general section - and not moved to the bikers area.
Cheers!
I am a Biker:
"
I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by.
But you didn't see me driving behind you when you flicked
your cigarette butt out the car window.
I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children.
But you didn't see me when I took time off from work to
run toys to the homeless.
I saw you stare at my long hair.
But you didn't see me and my friends
cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.
I saw you roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves.
But you didn't see me and my brothers donate our old
coats and gloves to those that had none.
I saw you look in fright at my tattoos.
But you didn't see me cry as my children were
born and have their name written over and in my heart.
I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.
But you didn't see me going home to be with my family.
I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.
But you didn't see me when you were changing
the CD and drifted into my lane.
I saw you yelling at your kids in the car.
But you didn't see me pat my child's
hands, knowing he was safe behind me.
I saw you reading the newspaper or map as
you drove down the road. But you didn't see me squeeze
my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn.
I saw you race down the road in the rain.
But you didn't see me get soaked to the skin so
my son could have the car to go on his date.
I saw you run the yellow light just to save a
few minutes of time.
But you didn't see me trying to turn right.
I saw you cut me off because you needed
to be in the lane I was in.
But you didn't see me leave the road.
I saw you waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.
But you didn't see me. I wasn't there.
I saw you go home to your family. But you didn't see me.
Because I died that day you cut me off. I was just a biker.
A person with friends and a family. But, you didn't see me.
Repost this around in hopes that people will
understand the biker community.
I hope you never lose someone that rides.

Well said,we are still a motorist after all.If you cannot see the bright bikes and the bright leathers should you really be driving. There are still some respectable riders out their, sadly there are plenty of idiots too.

You forgot to mention the part where 10% of all road accidents are bikers and that 80% of those accidents are 1 vehicle accidents.
I have friends who are bikers, they dont do 80 on a 40 road with trucks that pull out of a junction just up the road, or the fact that sheep can get out of the field opposite our house, or the fact that the parked cars on the road hide the fact that 80mph in a 40mph zone where children can come out of the houses and not see the biker flying past...
It works 2 ways, its not just the motorist in his car, its also the biker on his bike, if one does not respect the other or the fact that there are pedestrians or other obstructions or distractions, then you wonder why they have the highest accident rating, mainly through stone walls near where i live, mainly down to driving with undue care and attention because the sun is out and they want to go fast on a straight bit of road without taking other road users into consideration, so something else to think about!

Same for cars to mate, i was a biker my bro to, gave it up due to cars Been cars. As a bike if i used for work every day in the summer, i would have to slam the brakes on or take avoiding action 3-4 times a week. 80% of the time it's female drivers to It they only used the mirrors once in a wile. A mate was killed last yr due to a woman over taking a tractor. It tuck her that long to over take my mate went over the bike stright onto the tractor, and this was just befor a corner

Nice little ditty, but as Tony has also pointed out we are our own worst enemy at times. 80% single vehicle accidents not good. I was one of those once, thankfully ego and bike hurt the most. Were no angles As to speeding through 30 & 40 areas. Were all to blame on that one:
Who here actually his the speed limit before passing the limit sign?
Who here eases off the power and allows their vehicle to slow down on its own?
Who here powers on before passing the national speed limit sign on exiting the built up area?
Who here powers up to 60, to slam down to the speed limit?
If your honest, I'm sure were all guilty of some of the above wether on bikes or in a car.
Speeding is an all vehicle issue.

Bit of stereotyping too, as I am a biker and am as bald as a coot with no tattoos
The point is right though, car drivers need to be more aware of bikers and what their machines can and can't do. They are different to cars and some drivers tend to forget. Plus it would be nice if you actually seen us every now and then.
Yes there are some daft bikers, but that is not the point as we are far more vulnerable than a cage driver. The reason there are a higher percentage of single vehicle accidents on bikes is not just down to speed. It is far easier to get it wrong on a bike and much more difficult to put it right.

I rode bikes for 16 years on a daily basis.
I assumed that cars couldn't see me and generally gave them a wide berth where possible. Might even drive below the limit to that end!
Had a few near misses, but never had an accident.
There seem to be a large number of riders out there who think they have an Angel on their shoulder. Filtering at 80 mph in the wet with a pillion is something I've seen more than once.
I just let them get on with it and drive as if they aren't there.
Good luck to them I say.

Joking aside. My best friend was killed whilst riding his motorbike. He was 19. That is the reason I am extremely vigilant regarding bikes. Just wish a few more were the same.
Also, some bikers can be absolute plums. I had one try to overtake me on a bending sliproad to the motorway. He lost it on the gravel by the barrier and ended up on the other side of the carraigeway. I stopped, helped him to the barrier and sat with him until the ambulance came. Got to work, once I knew he was safely on his way to the hospital, and threw my guts up. Not a pretty site. He was fine, thankfully.
