I am the proud owner of an impreza terzo, number 35. Im thinking of spending some money on tuning the engine and uprating the brakes and suspension but i am unsure and need advice. The car currently has 186k on the clock, however had a full engine rebuild at a cost of £1100 at 168k and was told by the garage the engine is as good as it would have been if it had done 40k from new. i wanna tune it up etc but i dont wanna spend my hard earned cash on the car if its not gonna last that much longer, should i buy another impreza with less mileage and spend the money on that or is it worth keeping and maintaining my terzo, i really dont wanna get rid it sounds amazing, more like a cackle than a deep grunt if you know what i mean, i havnt heard another impreza sound like mine and beleive me ive had races with a good few
so what do you think??? keep the terzo and maintain it or buy another impreza and start my own little project, i just dont wanna spend money on it then 6 month down the line the engine pops/?/ anyone tell me how long the engines are known to last etc... id appreciate any feedback, thanx.......

What year is it mate?? 96/97 if i remember?
I had the same problem with MY96WRX.Basically no you can't just remap the origional ECU.There are a few options though such as fitting an ESL daughterboard which is mappable but still retains most of the (really good) benefits of the ECU such as 3D boost control. An APEXI power FC is a popular choice but TBH i've never liked the thought of driving around with a £300 bit of kit in my car!
Another and more expensive option is a new ECU such as a Simtec etc but these have even more benefits such as anti lag and more control over things such as doing away with the problamatic MAF sensors.
Basically if you sort the exhaust out..fully de-cat etc and get an ESL you will see a lot more power and it will drive a lot better and smoother.

Not much like an STI, it's a UK spec engine that started with around 220 bhp, Jap spec WRX came in at around 240 bhp, and the STI 260 to 280 depending on year.
If you are serious and have a decent budget, go for a later car with a mappable ecu, but then it won't have had an engine re-build....
Only you can choose really.

VF35 for about £250 plus a fuel pump, maybe £85 and then a Power FC and mapping = 300 bhp and a worried clutch !
Sorry no expert on classics. Don't forget better brakes will make a quicker road car....

Its one of those hard choices, I went through the same things when I sold my MY02 STi, After selling it they P1 I was going to buy ended up being a dog, So I am stuck with no scoob at all at the moment.
Anyways....... If it were me I would get a newer car, Less miles more off the shelf options.
