If its a 98 model year then it will be a version 4, if its manufactured in 98 but is a 99 model year then it will be a version 5.
Interior is a givaway, along with the crystal headlights.
These cars need super unleaded, some need super unleaded and octane booster, 99/00 (version 5/6 STi's) suffer from weak maf sensors so they need replacing (about 100 quid new), there is just so much about these cars that you either need to have it inspected or take someone who knows about them with you

276bhp standard, doubt if its pushing over 285-290bhp out of the box on super unleaded, 300bhp was never a standard model (its a bullsh1tters figures), some make more bhp, some less (normally knackered ones) but it should be pushing around 276bhp in standard form

Full service history, service intervals for these cars are 7.5k miles/6 months, whichever is first, cambelt change every 3 years, so if its a 98 it should be due one about now (major service with all the belts, gearbox and diff oils etc will set you back about 600 quid all in, including coolant and spark plugs) so budget for that.
Gearboxes can be a weak point, they are slightly notchy anyway but they shouldnt grind etc, check the clutch, not cheap, about 900 quid from a dealer but there is more than just the clutch replaced there
Brakes suck in standard form, upgraded ones are recommended, either discs/pads (pretty cheap really) or a bigger kit.
Check for all the usual signs of abuse and hpi the car, a dealer inspection or a speciallist would be advisable

Waynie,
Listen to Tony, great advice as always.
Do you know the milage of the car, is it mapped already?? check brakes too, they,re NOT the best ever made, listen from a cold start if you can, you may hear some piston slap, if this clears after a short while don,t be put off by that.
Clutch, box as Tony says, they,re crucial too, boxes will last if used with some love, mine has 350ft/lb going through it, has had this for near on 2yrs now.
If it,s a good one you,ll love it, great cars...

JDM just means that it was built (different spec) for and sold in the Japanese Domestic Market, before being imported at a later date to the UK. The JDM spec cars often have higher spec or trim levels.
