WRX or an STI?
Ladies and Gents.
I am looking to buy a newer Subaru however im kinda hitting a stumbling block on what sort to get.
What im thinking is that viewing many cars on the websites and garages a WRX will go for a lot less than an STI- I know how that sounds but its not meant to sound stupid!
Has anyone got a ltd edition UK300? What are they like?
Im looking at a 2.0ltr version not 2.5. 6speed gearbox doesnt worry me not having it!
Im wondering whether those people that have or bought a WRX wished or did change it soon after for an STI?
Will buying a WRX for less money, low mileage benefit me more if i intend to change the wheels, brakes, stereo, exhaust, remap, suspension anyway?
What do people see as a good price for certain miles on either car?
At the end of the day o know it will be harder to squeeze more hp out of a wrx than an sti but honestly how much do you really need as a daily driver?
Any views would be greatly appreciated or a friendly point in the right direction of a thread that one of you may have come across before as i couldnt find one that fitted.
Cheers

I agree with what everyone else has said. That saying, I have always wanted an STI, such an iconic motor. Still turns heads wherever you go. End of the day mate, its your call...drive one and you wont look back...Awesome bit of kit

Don't know wether its true but i was told if you want a daily comfortable driver a WRX and a STI if you don't mind the harsher suspension apparently the WRX is a lot softer sprung in standard form.
Correct me if i'm wrong

Thanks for your responses.
I believe i always knew what i was/like to get i think i was trying to talk my way out of spending more money!.
I thought i wanted a black one but a white one has just torepast me in the opposite direction and i think im in heaven. It may just have too be white.
Now ive just gotta find the right one at the right price and low miles!
Easy!

Hi Doodle,
What is the car's main use ?
1. WRX is easier on the family softer, more supple suspension.
2. WRX is easy to get to STI power levels, just spend some cash.
3. STI has better suspension, better brakes, nicer interior and a six speed box plus trick diffs. If you can live with the STI's harsher ride, it's an easy step up to 340 bhp.
So you have to choose !

It will be a daily driver.
I dont have kids to cart around ie no family ie harsher ride is
Thats what im trying to work out if its better to buy a wrx cheap, use the money that i would have spent on an sti upgrading to bits that i want?
Do i really need trick diffs? im not going to use it on a track.
Ahhhh **** it where do i buy an sti from?

I've put 32k on mine in under 18 months so it's perfectly acceptable as a daily driver and a damn fun one at that!

If you are already thinking about upgrading, get an STI. It's not just the extra power, it's also the suspension, the wheels, the trim, and the brakes (very important!).
Only reason to go for the WRX is to get a Wagon - very good reason mind!

STI it is then...
They aren't much worse to live with, and are superb straight out of the box.
Re-map, fuel pump, exhaust, Whiteline rear ARB and you'll be amazed.
LOL

P.S. 2002 STI wagon was a JDM only car, sadly...

Pottering around in a WR blue STI in summer is still very good fun. It doesn't always have to be warp speed around roundabouts

Sorry I thought I'd said- I'd prefer a 2.0 as it's meant to be my cheap run around! It's going to be a daily driver.
Budget- not sure what I'm willing to part with- say 10k to start.May have 2x cars to part ex. Might even put a large chunk down and the finance the rest! Not sure yet!

Ive got a wrx bug with 240bhp/235lb....its my daily driver and I love it...had her a year.....got good tyres in january and its a diffferent car....
just had new disks n pads all round.... both front drops and a fixed window(+MOT) for £400....can't say better than that.
I will probably get an Sti eventually. I want a Spec C....but for now my WRX is more than enough.

The 2.5 is more torquey, and you find you make the same progress but with far less rev chasing.
My 2.5 STI now sits at 24mpg, where as my old 2003 2.0L STI returned 22-25mpg.
(Same driver, same road commute etc etc, you may get better (or worse!))

Another vote for the STi.....I ran a WRX for 3yrs and in all honesty ride quality isn't much worse with an STi, and lets face it who buys a scooby for ride quality. I changed my WRX as I was going to tune it in to psuedo-STi levels and when I added up everything that was needed (not just power levels) then it made sence to get the STi - then should you wish to tune that the world is your lobster

Had a 2000 Turbo, 2 x WRX 2.0, 1 x WRX 2.5 and now an STI.
If you get a WRX and modify it, insurance goes higher than STI.
If you want WRX with more power, try and get a special edition as these appear on insurers lists as a standard car and they can give you a sensible price.

While I agree that if you're buying s/h and planning to mod, then you might as well go straight for an STi, I thought I'd just say that I'm more than happy with my WRX.
I bought mine new and the price difference was over £5k, so couldn't afford an STi. Its cost me under £2k to get STi+ performance. I know it doesn't have all the other STi goodies, but as a daily driver I can leave it in the street or in a car park without worrying about it too much.
As for running costs, there is a fair difference between the two. If you read the thread on 'newage mileage answered', there are WRX owners getting 400+ miles to a tank and STi owners getting 200-250. Add in extra costs for road tax, insurance, brembo brake pads and discs and you will notice the difference.
Not trying to put you off, but if its a daily driver, you need to check the figures.
