It certainly is not obsessive to wax your alloys. provided you really clean you alloys beforehand and then wax afterwards will be of great benefit. Wax will add a protective barrier as well as gloss. Brake dust will settle on the wax and a week later they are dead easy to wash.
However, you must regularly wax the wheels for optimum protection. It is something I always do when valeting a car and also I wax my alloys.
Have fun. ;-)

I just spent the last 2 hours utilizing the trolley jack (XMAS PRESSIE) and removing my Super L's and completely removing every spot of brake dust inside and out then the Wax Wizard treatment inside and out.
Autoglym Tyre Dressing as a final touch and my wheels look superb
IMHO of course
Wax your wheels obsessive NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
