Yes all type R's are imports, the difference between the P1 and STI type R (and there are quite alot), P1's have ABS, Type R's dont, but do have DCCD (drivers controlled Centre Differential), P1's dont have rear 2 pots, STI type R's do. Type R's (ver 5/6) need the highest octane fuel available (as they are mapped for 100 ron fuel, 3&4's its recommended the same) P1's just need 97 ron (but I would run exactly the same high octane fuel as per JDM STI's as the maps are the same for the P1/Ver 5/6's but with more knock correction on the P1).
Type R's have more goodies, electric folding mirrors and climate control for instance, and they are normally cheaper than a P1.

What to look for.... Maf sensors go (common on 99/00 year cars) and that can lead to a big engine rebuild bill
Service history is required on a P1 for sure, check for service history on a type R also, 6 monthly/7.5k miles.

p1 cheaper insurance and the limited build did it for me, as for the rear 2 pots not a bi one to me as my p1 came with 6 pot ap's on the front and the lack of the dccd come on be honest how many who have it classic and newage who really uses it or do you keep it set to auto. P1 would be my choice and I am biased

I must admit, my v5 type r has dccd and i have never touched it. Its extremely tail-happy in the wet

Dccd adjustment makes a huge difference on my sti type ra.........and getting to know the settings is part of the fun.Even just launching at the drag strip with diff open and then winding it forward gradually every run improved my 60ft times.

And in the wet with it set to orange the car becomes far more managable......

P1 is a much more capable and compliant road car (if that's going to be the cars use for the percentage of the time.....)

I run a P1 and 22B (22B is much and such the same animal as the type-R) and the P1 for me is the better road car aswell as having about 95% of the track ability.

With the P1 you will get a longer ratio'd gearbox which is much easier to live with (especially if your car is de'catted....) and as said ABS is a lot more use than DCCD for all but 3days a year. Electric mirrors are handy but shouldn't be a reason for choosing a car and the "climate control" isn't exactly great and again, really not something that should influence your descision when buying these kinds of cars.

P1 can easily be remapped etc. and will have a more reliable history.

Type R will be cheaper and in reality, both cars are equally as fast. It depends what you want the car to do/what you intend to use it for and what YOU prefer.......go drive the two and see what you like. Don't listen to us! Lol.

Go drive both is the best way. Its all personal preference. I think most people who go for either are primeraly doing it for the 2 door look (me included). In standard form I think the P1 is a better all round car, but with the money saved by buying a Type-r you could have a few mods...

The P1 isnt the better drivers car, but it is easier to live with than an STI type R (hence the type R is a little more focused).
