You can buy this pack thing that has all the stuff needed to keep you legal. I think you get a reflective triangle and the things you put on your lights, there are a few other things as well just can not remember hope this helps a bit tho.

Several boxes of fuel additive and a proper spare wheel not a space saver plus a set of ear muffs

We went to Italy last year and the year before. Awesome roads in the Dolomites.
You'll need a triangle, things to make the lights dip the other way, a fire extinguisher, yellow vests inside the car (not in the boot), a first aid kit, spare bulbs as well as the papers for the car. MOT, insurance and vehicle registration documents. Also, I think speed detectors are illegal now (radar and GPS systems).

Are you going through Germany and Austria to get to Italy or through France? If you go through Austria, you're supposed to buy a ticket when you enter the country. You get them from petrol stations. It's called a vignette (or something like that).

Something like this AA EUROPEAN TRAVEL KIT LEGAL REQUIREMENT FRANCE 99788* on eBay, also, Other Car Accessories, Car Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 10-Jun-09 11:22:55 BST) ?

I'm doing the same in July mate!! Going through France, to Italy, across to Slovakia (visit the in-laws), then back home across the top of Europe.

I'm doing an oil change just before we go. Will be ordering some fuel additive as said above, incase I have to put some ****e petrol in.
We're not going to book hotels etc, just wing it.

Speak to your insurance company, as you may need a ''green card''. Even though you may have european cover, it's normally 3rd party overseas without it.

The AA do european breakdown cover. Its expensive but a hell off a lot cheaper than arranging to get your car back to Blighty. Insurance papers, registration log book and MOT a must, as all the safety equipment listed above. Those europeans love to give out on the spot fines.

Can you take photo copies, or do they have to be original documents?

Whats a green card?

Don't think you actually get a greed card anymore but it refers to a piece of paper that shows your insurance is valid in europe. You used to be limited on the amount of time you could go abroad for but these days it just a matter of telling the insurance company the dates you are travelling and them posting you the eu cover note (your cover note may already do it but best to check). Don't leave anything to the last minute.

Originals documents I would think, may be best to make copies and leave the copies at home in case any docs do get lost. They are all easy enough to get replacements.
