What Scooby will I get for 7K?
#1
I'm due a new car next month, and have a budget of 7k. I've been onto the AutoTrader site, & found a few early (95/96)UK Turbos with about 60/70k miles on the clock. What are theses going to be like? Am I looking at dogs? Should I avoid imports because of insurance? (I'm 25 this year, and was banned for speeding in '98)
I'm new to Scoobies (being a Ford nut) and don't really know what I'm looking at or what to watch out for. My other alternative is to buy a Saff Cossie - but I know I'll kill myself in one.
Please help me to preserve my life!

Try looking at http://sidc.co.uk and then read the faq's, there's a lot of info on there, you should be able tpo pick up a fairly decent (for year) car at that price, it wom't be the newest, but then you can't expect miracles.

For that sort of money, i'd check out the insurance costs on an early Jap import. Whatever you buy is gonna have no warranty to speak of so you may as well go the higher performance route. If you have your own ideas about body mods etc, may be worth buying a car with smashed bumper and crap wheels and fitting the stuff you want. As above, look at SIDC FAQ then check autotrader..

I went to see a white 93 Jap WRX yeterday. 17" rims and 24k miles all for £5700. Drove as new (as expected) apart from a bit of brake judder. It had had a mild front end bump but had been repaired ok, most people wouldnt be able to tell.
Just shows whats available for the money

They are good for the miles too... mine has 95k and still going strong... touch wood...
UK before 97 has horride seats but some are swapped...
Nice big turbo on the older cars too (TD05)...
Good luck

Of course, you could get a Sport (2 litre, without the turbo). Although the acceleration isn't quite as good, the handling is pretty much the same, and for that price you could get yourself an S or T plate.
Funnily enough, my T Plate Sport could be coming up for sale in June / July time as it comes to the end of it's PCP

Cheers fellas!! Looks like I'll be hunting down an early Turbo (love my dump valves you see!). I've heard that about UK seats.
Glad to hear they can cope with the miles... but just one final question: should I avoid a Jap import? Will I be killed on the insurance for one? What should I check for on an import?
Thanks in advance!
ps: Look... no signature!!

Well I'm 25 and have two years no claims, never had a ban or speeding fine (think I've been lucky) I pay £1900 a year fully comp, but thats on a W plate, so your probably loogin at the same price mate if you've had a ban in the last 5 years !
Hope this sort of helps.
Edited cause I can't spoll !
