Hi all,

I found this note on my windscreen this Wednesday when returning from work:

Now, I can understand how this might be annoying - but it was legally parked - and you don't go and threatening peoples car/property!! Especially with such appalling spelling and grammar. And to follow up a threat with a 'Please do not park here..' is pretty lame huh?

Anyway! If the last part of the note was left- I would have thought- 'OK, fair play' I can understand, but I've only parked in this road about 3 times in the last 6 months when the opposite road is full and always tried to be careful, as one does with your pride and joy. I also noted that there was only 1 car there when I parked up early in the morning and the same 1 car there upon my return (which was fairly late in the evening).

I went door knocking to try and find out who it was, but obviously no-one knew anything, but pretty much everyone I spoke to agreed it was out of order - and obviously I reported it to the local community plod and community officer. I wont be planning on parking there again in a hurry - but has anyone else had any similar experiences?

What would you do?

Ignore it and not park there again. Not worth the grief and/or vandalism that may happen.

I think you got off lightly, a colleague of mine had the note sellotaped to her wing but she was so frightened when she read she pulled it off and the paint and drove off very quickly. I think it is a situation you can never win even with the police involved they know your car wherever it is.

Park up in the same place again. Hide round a corner and watch and see if any shady character goes up to your then fill them in

Yeah, it sucks - not worth the aggro like you say is it - but its not right! I think I defused the situation somewhat though by speaking to people - everyone who I spoke to in the road understood and agreed with me - I actually suspected one chap who was very tight lipped and let his g/f talk for him (who parked very close to where my car was). Its a different storey when your face to face.. suddenly you get the human touch - which seemed to work. Cant say it was him for sure though... But wont be parking there again anyway!

Some people are complete w@nkers arent they?

Guess there are a lot of haters out there, especially when you have a nice car....

Fair play to them i say,if its a street that is a residential street but close to where the train station is i think if all who has replied had this stret parking situation they would be miffed if they returned and no car spaces were available cause all the city folk had nabbed em for free to earn there £££££.

where i work,in a similiar street scenario,cars were gettin wd40 on the windscreens etc,the plod were involved as well and people were reduced to puttin cctv in their cars with a small note stating cctv was present to get around the law.

The hide and battery sounds like a good idea..but when it comes down to it....are you going to be able to watch your car every day..someone will vandalise it, and nobody will see anything..

It doesn't matter that your legally parked and entitled to park there, I personally would not like to take the chance that some spiteful bathplug would take the oportunity to key it or something...

I would be propper peed off, but would still find somewhere else to park.

Obviously we don't know exactly what the street is like, but I have to agree with where you are coming from here. I live in a street near a metro station, and the top end gets clogged up terribly through the day, by people parking there, to use the metro. Not to mention, the surrounding streets. Just because there may not be cars parked up at certain times, doesn't mean people won't come back at any given time, to park at home, and potentially not be able to, as their street has been invaded by strangers.

As for talking to residents, guilty people would try and make out they weren't bothered by you being there etc. plus alot of people don't like face to face conflict, and might think a certain way, yet say nothing if confronted. People are strange.

You might not be a regular, but it's not unrealistic to think the street might have parking issues, particularly during the day. That's going to frustrate anyone. Think how you'd feel if you finished a shift at work (nightshift perhaps), turned up at home, and couldn't get parked because of people that don't live there.

The approach may have been wrong, I do believe that, but depending on the hassle residents may have, I can understand their frustration.

You got off lucky... a lad I used to work with parked outside a local nutters home whilst he was visiting a sick friend near by in His pride and joy an ST Fiesta.
Came back to find His wing mirrors' Bonnet and Roof all smashed or dented with a Iron Bar.
Police turned up and arrested the tw*t that did it,went to court and the Idiot was fine 200 Quid.... not the first time He had done this as well.... on the Dole and ordered to pay at 2 Quid a week.

If you live on a street where you can never park on cos some ****** keeps leaving his car there then going to work, you would get pissed off as well!


Dont get me wrong, a big cul de sac with lots of pavement room and a few big, detached houses, its probably ok. But in a small urban street crammed with terraced houses its not, because the residents will have enough parking problems of their own, without some out of towner nicking spaces from 7.30 till 18.00.

I dont agree with the spineless "ill key your car when your at work" threats, and i would always say something to their face (like dont park here again as it greatly inconviniences me, and if they got arsey i would tell them to **** off now or ill slash all four tyres).


At the end of the day, your taking the space of someone who lives right there, thats a ***** trick! (imagine coming home from a 6-2 shift and not being able to park anywhere near your own house until seven at night)

I live in a similar cul-de-sac, with people parking in "my" road to go work in an office block nearby (an RBS office block). There's a huge parking block right next to their office, but it costs 3-4 quid a day to park there, so the ****ers park in my road instead.

This drives me nuts, because it means that I, who live there, can't park on my own road when I come home from work at 5, because they don't leave until 6:30'ish. Quite often I have to park in another road far away (every other road nearby is single yellow lined) *or* stick the car in the parking garage the RBS idiots should be using instead, and then I have to go out in the evening and move the car so I can get to work in the morning.

This is a very sore subject for anyone who lives in one of these streets.
My g/f parents live near a hospital, and have the same problem. If you were on the receiving end of this sort of thing, you'd feel the same. Just cos people want to save a couple of quid, they make others pay by not letting them park outside their own house.

I should wait in the car and then, when they approach you, give them a dictionary because they clearly need one.

I am sure that will help the situation.

Sorry but if you park on a public road, anyone else is entitled to as well. I used to have to and yes got fed up with fighting for a space but put up with it. I now pay good money for a drive.

I'm surprised to hear any Scooby owner condoning vandalising cars... If its a problem petition the council to put in residents parking restrictions, or to change the hours if they already exist. The OP (or anyone) should be able to park their car legally without worry.

If you've got a tax disk and the road is not private then you've got every right to park there.
If the residents have an issue with people parking on "their" road then they should lobby for residents parking permits, otherwise put up and shut up.


As for the note, I'd take it to the local cop shop, tell them the street name, and tell them people are using intimidation tactics to stop people using the public highway. maybe the police could remind them who really owns that road.

go and buy an absolute heap. one that just about drives but has tax and mot. insure it third party and park it there and leave it. as long as you have tax, ins and mot you're well within your right to park there. it's not been abandoned as you have parked it there and know where it is

My mother lives on a fairly quiet road near to a main road. There are people who park outside of her house rather than leave their car on the main road. That's fine to a point, but sometimes my parents have difficulty in getting their car off the drive. She even said to a girl once about parking opposite their drive. The girl gave them a bit of abuse and then later complained that they'd put a nail in her tyre! My mother would never dream of it, but I can see the girls point - she even tried to run my stepfather over (he's 76 BTW) but she never parked there again. Another one is a guy parking a works lorry - 3 tonne road repair type with trailer attached - on this residential road and then he walks off home somewhere else! Cheeky ******!

We have just had to install an electric gate across our Private drive as all and sundry ignored our private parking signs etc, and abused anyone asking them not to park there. So we are now £10k down out of our residents fund because people don't understand the meaning of private!!

Yeah- I can imagine them peeping through the net curtains at 6.30am watching me parking up, their eyes subsequently popping out out of their sockets, steam shooting out of their ear and exclaiming "I don't believe it!!! He's parked in "my" road"


As I said before though - first time I'd parked up there for a couple of months - I can appreciate how it would be annoying - but the fact that they didnt leave me a nice note explaining (which I would have been happy to take notice to) and instead unlawfully threaten my motor was the thing that got my goat - It completely undermined the real issue and their "request". I've had this happen to me too and I understand it is annoying, but I wouldnt go and threaten someone's motor over it!

I must also note that anyone buying a house without offroad parking or a drive, and to assume that they have the right to- (or will be able to) park outside their house, every time is a more than a bit naive! I made sure the house I moved into had enough parking - was the one of the major requirements of choosing my current property come to think of it....

Anyways! - the neighbourhood is a fairly nice one, so I went round and dropped a note to everyone the other night that explained how everyone who I had spoken to agreed that the note was antisocial and for the community to be vigilant towards such behaviour! I also let them know it had been reported etc and thanked everyone who was so nice to me and gave me 'helpful' information. I also added I would not be intimidated by such threats.

Interestingly the chap who I suspected (the house opposite to where I parked) suddenly became very interested in what I was putting through peoples doors and his girlfriend came out looking a bit worried asking what I had found out. He also had a second car there... Bit of a dimwit to be honest, and didn't have much to say; my moneys on him. Think they have only recently moved there, so probably a bit embarrassing for em! Didn't seem the type to back their words up in my opinion, but as I hardly ever park there it shouldn't be a problem. New parking spot now!

It is frustrating, but you cant go around threatening people. And of course.. if the area gets a bad name.. its the sort of thing that ultimately can drive down house prices isn't it? Not to mention increase insurance premiums for residents in the street if any vandalism ever occurs there

Sorry to hear those of you who also face this problem from the other end - two sides of the coin with this one, but in most cases, there are ways of doing things before you have to get heavy handed.

IMO if you live on one of these streets tough *******. The only people who have a rght to park outside their houses are people with driveways. Its a fools opinion that the space on the road in front of the house is theirs.

Lol you p***ed someone right off havent you my sister is going threw the same thing someone told her not to park out side her own house by letter. She is not happy if the street has permit holding and you have no right if you do not have a permit but if it doesnt then i would park there and watch from a distance to see if they would try damage it then kick some a** . no rely go tot he police and get some reference that you reported it then if somthing did happen they have to act. Criminal damage can hold 5yr sentance

If you pay road tax that entitles you to park on a public road of your choice, when you choose.

It may not sit well with the residents but you would be well within the law.




Now personally I would take the warning and seek a different parking spot.
