It a toughie, I would tell them, chances are it will add twenty quid on to the cost. Its all about how you tell them. Call up and say your old one was broken so you changed it for a new one but couldnt get an OG Subaru one.
should make little or no difference.

Definitely declare it. How you declare is entirely upto you, but any undisclosed mod could invalidate an insurance policy, regardless of how minor the mod might be!

Best check it has OEM wheels and tyres too then and no additional stickers, OEM wiper blades in case you have an accident in the rain, OEM brake pads and discs...just put it on, enjoy and don't crash

it doesnt make much differnece.. I added Wheels, Brakes, Suspension to my insurance and it was about £60 i think.. the wheels and brakes alone were about £17 each it was the suspension that bumped it up.

Goto someone like admiral and do a quote... say its modded and there are tick boxes you tick for all the mods.. really good site and easy to see how much each mod adds(with admiral). The more you add the cheaper, ie my 3 individual would have been more.

hope that helps.. I was suprised how little it was to add everything and now im safe knowing im 100% legal. I even added business insurance and that was only a few £.

Tell them that its different from standard and non power enhancing. Chances are it will make little difference to your policy but some companies will only replace with standard parts - which will no doubt be dearer than your after market one.

Mine made no difference to the cost. A word of advice, if you are changing the back box to realease more 'burble', you will want to change the resonated section for a straight one too. Its the bit that is attached to the back box that looks like it has a hot water bottle in it!. I changed my back box and while it made a bit of difference the only time the flat 4 rumble came back was when I change the resonated pipe too. It was about £99. It doesnt affect anything alse (cats etc). Enjoy it.

I went for about 10 years not declaring mods and got away with it. Only as I got older and wiser did I declare any mods. If you are lucky it will not matter however looking at the worst case scenario; you are in an accident, kill someone and the insurance company do not cover you.....could you live with that?

Thats the reason why I ask, I am at the age where my conscience is loud and clear. If I know its there, I can not pretend I dont know.

My dealer offered me a free STi backbox one month after I bought my wrx, so I went for it. Quite a few years ago now. Didn't mention it to my insurer at the time. If it's purely cosmetic I wouldn't worry (ie no performance change). If you change up or downpipes too esp with a remap then I'd say it's essential that you inform them, your insurance would be invalid otherwise.

However switching alloys doesn't count as cosmetic as they change the appearance and value of the car and is potentially more attractive to thieves too. A slightly different backbox won't cause you much trouble. Or are you fitting a Blitz or Vortex???
I held off adding any other mods until very recently, but now with KM so minor mods can be declared with no cost increase. They had no issues with lowering springs, wheels, backbox...other insurers can ask a small fortune. Tried Adrian Flux recently before choosing KM, they quoted me £700 *extra* for any wheel change regardless of make Computer says no!!!
