Rear rattling noise...
Folks,
I have an 06 STI with only a few k on the clock. I'm aware of the struts being a bit suss on these but the noise isnt all the time. It is more of a rattle from the boot area every now and then when i go over uneven roads. Wonderin if it could just be that crap wooden boot cover that lifts a bit. Checked all the good stuff...jack secure etc

My guess is it will be the age old issue of the rear suspension.
My 03 STI did exactly the same and had 2 sets of rear shocks under warranty before I went third party.
The very fact that there are numerous threads on this subject in here and that it was a problem on the 03 cars and still a problem on the 06 cars is a great example of how not to deal with a design fault. Nice one Subaru!!!!

I had a rattle eminating from the rear. It wasn't there all the time & you could hear it more when driving along-side a wall or simular. It turned out to be a rear drop-link.
This was after having both rear struts replaced under warranty & with only a few thousand miles on the clock.
Get your rear drop links checked.
Edited to add - I had the drop link replaced & no more rattles!

i had rattling/creaking every time i went over a bump. It started off intermittent and eventually happend everytime i went over any kind of bump. Apparantly its normal thing with Bugeyes (not sure about hawkeyes).
Got the garage to grease the rear droplinks or bushlinks (whatever theyr called) which sorted the problem

I take it the suspension problem is only relating to sti`s ? I have a wrx and now and again I get a strange noise from the rear at low speeds - sounded firstly if it were coming from something in the boot but now i`m not so sure.
plan to take everything out such as board, spare wheel etc and see if its still persists.
is this a common fault on wrx`s as well - car is only 4yrs old and done 30k
might have a look at the boot catch as well just incase.

I've had the rear shocks replaced twice (so far) on my WRX at 18 and 26k. No problems yet and it's now on 36k. I noticed a knocking noise like something was moving about in the boot, but it was only noticeable when moving off.

Spoke to a suspension supplier who told me the problem is due to incorrect handling of the damper before fitting to the car, don't shoot me i'm only quoting.
"The damper's are inverted as they are unstrapped causing the gas in the damper to move the wrong way, this then causes the banging ap slow speed and eventual failure as the damper is not working the way it should"
Now it seems if that's the case then why don't KYB make the damper's better or change the way packaged before shipped.
