I read on hear that they are actually classed as a firearm therefore illegal. I told my mate who has an import but he just laughed.

If it is a flare that is designed to just sit on the road to alert others then it shouldnt be a problem and should come under the same restrictions as a firework. If the flares fire into the air then it is classified as a firearm, if you get stopped by a traffic officer with one you could have some serious problems.

10 years on and mine is still in the footwell they are also not classed as a firearm, they are a very low powered flare, fireworks are more dangerous!

Doesn't yours have drawings on it then?

Also i think it seems the bigger the car the bigger the flare when my mate used to import GTRs they had ones that were about the size of small Coke bottles

Still got my flare snuggly clipped in it's holder on the passenger's side just below the glovebox bottom hinge on the lower A-pillar. From looking at mine Ive kind of worked out some of it; it has what looks like a manufacturing date (06/2003) and a best before date? (05/2007) or replacement date. It says keep away from children, source of ignition, and the pictures show you how to use it by; removing the flare cover and push the flare into it the oppostie way around, then remove the white (matchbox style) striker and hit/swipe against the tip (match style) that was underneath the white cap. Hold away from face :-), and either lay down or stand the flare up on the road to warn other drivers of hazard.
I think this is such a cool thing to have in any car and why not? were all adults aren't we and these can prevent accidents. Much more visable than a plastic triangles especially in fog or wet conditions!

Lots probably get taken out before export or get pinched by potential buyers here in the UK.
