Being Towed

I'm pretty sure you must have all four of the Impreza's wheels on the ground for damage free towing. I'm sure someone here will give you the full techy explaination as to exactly why and what will happen if you don't...
Oh yeah, obviously all four wheels off the ground is ok too.

As most tow trucks lock the front wheels and drag the back on the road I am sure it will either drag two locked rear wheels or break a drive shaft or diff?
It the front were suspended in mid air then I guess they would turn with the back and all would be fine... still seems far better to load whole car onto the truck though!
Worth remembering if you have to ring the AA though!

I heard a story about the AA coming to the rescue of a Scooby owner and towed him back home. Lifted the front wheels up and plodded off, he had to have the gearbox rebuilt and the cost was picked up by the AA.
Lift not drag...![](http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif)

There is no problem towing the car with all the wheels on the ground and the gearbox in neutral.
As other people have said there will only be a problem if the front and back axles are allowed to rotate at different speeds eg when being towed with the front wheels in the air. This is because the viscous part of the centre diff tries to stop this from happening and will rapidly overheat.
With all the wheels on the ground the centre diff is not doing anything as both axles are going the same speed.
