Default F**KED MY GEARSTICK!!!!

i was trying to perform this mod:

Quick Shift

A cheaper VERY permanent way to a quick shift.
Remove the gearknob/gater. Take one hacksaw, and cut off the top of the gear stick, leaving about 5mm of thread. If you can, run a 12mm die down the G/S to extend the threads. Note that you will only make a shallow cut, as the G/S is 11mm dia, with a 12mm thread "rolled" in. Don't worry if you can't extend the thread.
Use some electrical/ptfe tape to pack out the stick just bellow the treads (stops any gearknob movement) and re-fit gater/****.

any, i did it leaving 7mm of thread just to be safe, but i think the threads are i bit chewed up and i can not get it to tighten unless i can get the **** to go further down the stick, any ideas???

price of new standard ****???

what a bodge, it's the angles that are changed on a quickshift not the length of the lever. all your doing is shortening the height of the gearlever and making it need more effort to change gear. it may make the throw shorter but it may make it more uncomfortable as well

alrite alrite, i f**ked up!!!!

i didnt think it wud have much of an effect but thought it cudnt do any harm, guess i was wrong.

the **** does go onto the shaft about 5 or 6 threads but due to me not cleaning the metal threads up oncde hacksawed, i have chewed up the threads which the gear stick thread into (in the ****). getting a new gearknob would fix this.

anyone selling a standard gearknob or know where i could get one and how much??

Ahh, I see someone read that dodgy old "how tos" on the internet. ( Subaru Information Page ) Word of advice; don't belive everything you read on the internet; there is equally as much bulls**t as there is anything of any use (that includes vta dump valves and turbo timers )

Anyhoo, whats stopping you from running the thread cutter die up and down a few more times to clean up the thread?

His belief is that not cleaning up the cut end of the stick, means that the thread in the **** is b*ggered. (I think).

Reminds me of watching cartoons on telly on a Saturday AM. Startled coyote disappearing downwards at a rate of knots until the last speck disappears from view, followed by a cloudy impression of a significant impact.

yeah, it's due to me not cleaning the metal threads on the gear stick which has damaged the plastic threads in the gear ****.

where can i pick up an inexpensive dye for making threads from?

What a stupid mod!

Did you check the thread pitch originally on the gear stick to the one the die cuts?

alright i have now been driving without the gear **** on for a few weeks now and really need to get it fixed. problem is i've got no cash.

the gearknob will thread on but can pulll off and wobbles slightly due to the damaged threads.

i was wondering if there was any kind of epoxy resin or something similar (that will bond to both plastic and metal) than i can fill the hole with before screwing on??? (until i get some cash to do it properly of course)

First try masking tape or generally, thin tape. Clean up the cut end first if you haven't already.

im a plumber so i have plenty of ptfe tape, but i'll need to put it on REALLY thick to stop the wobbling but i'm worried about further damaging the plastic threads???

Scott,
Go to your local builders merchant, get a two pack resin bond. It will look like a small double barrelled silicone gun. Now your working time is about 10 mins max,so get all your prep done first. Have a rag with a solvent cleaner to hand for spills and cleaning off the bottom of your gear ****.
Don,t pack out the shaft with anything as it may split the ****.
Clean the inside of the **** and the shaft with the solvent cleaner. Don't smoke during this process, you could set fire to your interior and hands.... Allow to dry.
Only now cut the tops off the nozzles on the resin bond. Ps, read the destructions.
Fill the **** and shove it over the shaft, clean off any resin bond on the shaft NOW as you will need a hammer and chisel later. Gently put it into position and leave for an hour to harden fully. Jobs a good un.
WE use this **** to hang sinks and toilets using threaded bar....
