Question Performance Upgrade(s) for £500

I've got around £500 to spend and would like to increase the performance of my STI 04 UK car, this doesn't include the brakes which i'll tackle later. The car is standard bar a Prodrive backbox, is the going to be achievable with this budget.

Your thoughts and recc'd's please.

I would either buy some uprated suspension bits ARB's etc so you can go round corners faster or a Blitz Nur Spec R exhaust. You wont be going any faster but it'll sound like you are!

Remaps are circa £500 but with a standard STI you'll need a sports cat/decat, uprated panel filter and an uprated fuel pump to make it worthwhile

and driver training day on an airfield or similar to learn the limits of the car in a safe environment then use what you have learnt on the road when it is safe to do so!

cost £250ish, leaves the rest to replace pads etc and it will be afun day out to

Our current remap pricing is a shade under £400 with the VAT so you'd leave yourself £100 to put towards something else

I would go the remap route. A mate and myself recently had a remap. His standard 04 STI went from 268BHP to 330BHP and the only thing changed was the fuel pump. Whilst changing the cat to a sports cat etc will see even more benefits, you will still see a big jump in performance/drivablilty with a remap alone. We used Simon aka Jolly Green Monster. . Alterantively try the guys above, as i've always heard good things about them.

if you can push the budget a bit:
get both the up and down decat pipes (circa £165) search ebay
then the Mocom remap (£400)

thats what i did and saw great results on my 02 Sti.

mocom did recomend a uprated fuel pump also, which i had done (i think this is for safety/reliabilty)

Hmm, looks tempting to go down the remap route, will need to check that my insurance premium won't jump to high. How easy is it to return the car back to standard if required?

How much do the uprated fuel pump's cost supplied and fitted?

I think i would certainly look at upgrading the brakes, is starting off at replacing the brake pads a good place to start off?

I think they can revert to your orginal map quite easly (just an upload).
Insurance, is up to you, but they have no way of telling if its been remapped.
You'll have to contact mocom about the fuel pump, but it's not silly price. Mocom are not far either J7 M11.

decats+pump+remap = circa £700 (£200 above your budget) and your car is as good as it will get without spending silly money.

definately get the brakes checked before any of the above!

It upped my insurance by about £70 a year, but for the peace of mind, i felt it was worth it.

luckyscoob... your mate got an extra 62bhp just by changing the fuel pump

not 100% sure ide believe that..ide have to change the turbo, injectors, cooling and remap to get them results.. dont get me wrong you may be right it just seems a little hard to believe.

anyway..ide definatly go for a full decat and remap if you can push another couple of quid into your budget..i did the same plus fuel pump and panel filter and my car went from 215bhp to 255bhp.

a fuel pump will cost around £80ish and is easy enough to fit yourself

Standard 04 STi dyno'd at 268BHP/276lbs/ft before the map. Changed the fuel pump to a walbro, Jolly Green Monster remap, and it hit 330 of each. We had 3 mapped on the day, 2 hawkeyes and his 04. My Hawkeye gained about 45 BHP, as did the other one, but Pauls gained 62BHP!. I was sat in the back whilst it was being mapped, and the difference between before and after was amazing. Guess he just got lucky. That combined with Simons (JGM) magic

I'll admit I don't know much about tuning but i thought you'd get a lot more that that from a full decat and remap.

I've always though that took you to around the 300bhp mark.

not on a newage wrx.. you get good wrx's that make 280 on standard turbo.. others that struggle to make the power as the turbos struggle to flow the air at higher rpm.. but usually torque increases nicely..
