The term "version" applies to all Japanese Domestic Cars (JDM) i.e. wrx, sti ,ra etc.
A UK car is refered to by it's "model year".
As a general rule "model year" & "version" productions run from around Aug/Sept one year to Aug/Sept the next, so it's possible to get say a 98my car registered towards the end of 97.
If you have a 97my UK vehicle, it was produced at the same time as Ver III JDM cars.
