the cutoff point is 1 March 2001 -- that is when the V5 had to list a CO2 level on it
the banding then uses this C02 level to get the correct band
the price per band, as the government has shown can be retrospective
so we are in a bit of a limbo tbh -- the only reason the government back tracked on the higher price banding is the recession
I would have though post recovery it will come back in with a vengeance

The current system is such a rip off, when I bought my 56 plate hawkeye, I was looking about for an 06 plate registered just before 23rd march 2006 in order to get a "reasonable" (if thats the right word) car tax bill each year.
I couldn't find one I wanted at the time and got impatient so ended up buying the newest I could find for my budget.
It really gets my goat that someone with exactly the same model and emmisions pays half as much as me in tax.
No offence to anyone on here, my beef is with the governments car tax system.
sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

The best advice is to do what i did& go onto the Dvla website & ask the question by E-,mail they will e-mail you back telling you the answer.I tried to find out how much i would pay on a newly registered `99 Wrx Sti import & was told by the Dvla that the tax bracket of all imports depends on Co2 level of the vehicle no matter hold it is.I know everybody has got a different oppinion on this & there is people on here paying £200 for the same car but this is the answer i got off the Dvla on Monday.Just e-mail them & ask,but thats what my reply from them was.

I spoke to them prior to buying my 03 sti as i was worried about it going up to £425 a year and was told that any car prior to march 2001 was banded on engine size.
After 2001 and up to march 2006 it was changed to emissions with banding up to K (Which is the impreza, currently £215), then after 2006 new cars are grouped into bands up to M (£405).
Therefore as long as you're car is registered prior to march 2006 it will be £205 this year then from 2010 £245.
After 2010 who knows but it should not change greatly, the same as cars registered prior to 2001 are still based on engine size and have not been included into the emissions bands car prior to 2006 should remain in the same band.

its def 2001 not 2006, they changed the wording to regestered rather than built to close the loophole on older imports, when you regester an import it will be in the banding system, if the emissions are known
Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions)

* Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006
There lies the ditti that explains why cars registered before 23 March 2006 will be placed in band K mate
K
201-225
£215.00 12 months
£118.25 6 months

its simple its either post or pre 1st march 2001
28 Feb 2001 will not have C02 listed and will be taxed based on engine size
post 1st March 2001 will have CO2 listed so will be banded, what the bands are and what the government decide to charge in the future (given they have already indicated that they can and will be retrospective) is anyones guess
the 2006 date was a cop-out due to the economy falling of a cliff
its pre or post march 2001 that is the killer date
