Mondeo car of the year ?
#4
Through history most (if not all) cars of the year have turned out to be dogs in the end. Take the 1979 car of the year... the Talbot Horizon. 1982... the Austin Maestro!
I rest my case!

Dingy,
What's wrong with the Legacy - after all it is basically a stretched Impreza, or should that be the Impreza a shortened Legacy. I agree that Hungarian built AWD Suzuki Swift parading as a Subaru is crap!

Nice one Moss ! Good point, my mate has a fiat Tipo, he has a sticker on the rear window that says 'Fiat Tipo, car of the year 1989'
The windows are now held up with wooden wedges !

Just a tad blinkered here, aren't we chaps?
The Mondeo is now more of a drivers car than it ever was, looks significantly better than both its previous incarnation and the MY01 and, if we're trying to be objective, is a damn good car.
It beat the scooby. Perhaps stunning performance, 20MPG, rocketing insurance costs and questionable styling lost out to the better car for Mr Average?
Fine, I'm not average. I can live with that. There's hardly any need to make an accusation of bribery! Ford has sorted itself out recently with the Puma, Focus and now Mondeo.
Why have people got an axe to grind with ford?

Joking aside, the Mondeo is a good car... but Car of the Year??? I'm have no bias against Ford and none really pro Subaru. Infact, I certainly wouldn't pick MY01 Impreza as Car of the year either. I just feel that the "Car of the Year" award is a bit like "Manager of the Month" in football! The wheels suddenly fall off and they get relegated!

Car of the year, IT'S FEBUARY! Most of the year hasn't happened yet so how can anyone say the Mondeo is the best, how do they know no one's going to make a late entry?

That cover up is an absolute discgrace.
Andyp[/quote]
And the Pinto exploding Fuel tank, and the Explorer prototype instabilities which Ford ignored and tried to cover up by recommended under inflating the Bridgestone ATX tyres which helped them overheat them which helped them de-laminate...... the list goes on.
Having said that, Ford probably aren't much worse than any other manufacturer, they are just bigger and so more likely to get caught.
Matt.

Not forgetting of course, the General Motors Corvair whose rear wheels would "tuck in" causing the car to roll at speeds as low as 40mph.
And then there's the airbags that have killed dozens of small children.
Ford just seems to get the worst press.

Everyone involved in car reporting these days is playing it safe with their choices.
Its all so polictically correct, push economy, family values, speed limited driving, and disregards driver enjoyment, and anything that may get the pulse and speed cameras working.
The Mondeo in the Euro Car of the Year actually had "car of the year" or something similar chalked onto the shocks, which indicated the car was fitted with parts specifically for the contest, that would be presumably superior to what is put on the basic car.
Mondeo's are mass market rep cars, and I dont see how something like that can win a Car of the Year award by any stretch of the imagination.
BTW, these are simply my opinions, I'm old school, still remeber the days when advertising speed wasnt frowned upon.

i saw the mondeo being tested on driven. very impressive for a 'normal',cheap, car. i dont have a problem with fords, only 'gary boys' in orions. it will be interesting to see how many people on this bbs buy a focus cosworth in a few years time!
personally, from what i've read so far, i think the new x-type could/should be car of the year. i think its great looking, classy inside, big engine/oomph,good value and may seriously be my next car in a couple of years. toss up between that and new m3. is it me , or are bmw peddles VERY offset??
