Hi im in the process of selling my vx220 turbo, Im buying a small run about for work and am planning on buying an impreza for my fun car. I want to spend a maximum of £7000 and prefer the slightly older shape cars (P1 shape) Problem is what do i buy i want a three door it will be used for fast road/track work. There a too many different types what do you think would be best.
ps. it must be quick and tunable as i want it to evolve into a monster as it will be a pure fun car..

If you want something quick and tunable then a new age JDM STI or a UK bug for that price, tunable to over 400bhp for not much money
As for the classic type R's, not as tunable and you will need to throw a fair bit of cash at them to get them above 350bhp safely, gearboxes suffer, brakes are not up to the job, clutches aint up to the job and the engine definately isnt up for the job for serious power.

but then a 350bhp type r classic will drive up to a 400bhp bug, drop its skirts, slap the bug around the bumer with its oil sump, then drive off into the distance before the bug even has a chance to leave the line.
350 type r will prb be around exactly the same, if not lower, cost as 400bhp in the bug.

Gotta love that comment....haha. You could look about for a P1 with an uprated engine build....but then you'd be struggling to get one for £7000.
P1 is a very capable car and mine is running a safe 330bhp but money would need to be spent to get to 400bhp.....
For a £7000 budget I'd put myself in a Ver3 TypeR.......

Easy-easy........I should probably have elaborated and added that I wouldn't be buying a Ver3 for £7000......just put myself in one with that budget and spend what's left looking for more power and a nice set of coilovers.........haha.

So expensive it will be, 7k for a decent type R, gearbox & diff (2k) clutch (500) engine rebuild (4k) uprated brakes 1k, which is doubling the price of the car (oh and a FMIC 800 quid) and depending on the year, either an uprated ecu (1200 inc remap) or a remap @ 650. This = £15k+
New age JDM bug STI, 7k for the car, 1k for the turbo, 500 for the injectors, uprated fuel pump (100), full decat exhaust (500), remap 650. This = less than 10k.
Bargain!

Is a newage STI engine THAT much stronger?
Why not junk the classic STI engine and put the newage in from the start? Or 2.5 it? I would imagine I would 2.5 mine if it went.

They improved the new age engine quite a bit over the classic STI's engine, and even if you go 2.5 you would need to put decent internals in there, though a few people are running the 2.5's near 400bhp, they still have weak designed pistons
Classics are expensive to get up above 350bhp reliably, but I would look at other area's to improve the cars handling as this can make up for that lost 50bhp on the corners

I think in a classic for all but the most beserk road useage 350 is plenty. Mines still pretty quick to me and its probably around 320 ish (mapped, VF29, zorst, headers, filter)
I had heard that the 2.5s aren't the "magic bullet"
