Default it went bang!! :(

morning all.

this morning after leaving the girlfriends house the car started knockin but only at bout 4000rpm and not below or over.
i drove along the m40 towards beaconsfield and suddenly it died and was very reluctant to restart, so i pulled off and went into services to check out why.

On inspection of engine we found nothing no smoke no nothing and the knocking had stoped all together so got back on my way.

Drove thro beaconsfield to wycombe and thats wen it went crazy, it coughed spluttered and kept stalling every time tied to change gear and after bout 1min the revs stopped at 2500 rpm and would not go higher.

The smoke then started form the 5L of fresh oil where it has blown a whole in the side of the engine and covered all engine gearbox and chassis of the car.

i was not reckless driving at high speds just genereally driving at 70mph along m40 at 230am wen this happened.

what would cause the engine to blow a hole?

and also

wher wud ppl recommend for me toget a new engine from in the south east area??

cheers paul..

the reason you have a whole in your block is because the conrod went through the side. the knocking was a big end bearing gone(most common cause of scooby engine death) driving it more caused over heating etc and boom.

depends on your budget and what you want. most people when it goes bang upgrade but you can buy a second hand engine for around 800

talk to API as i found them awesome on the phone.

My engine went bang in january and im only just now putting in my upgraded engine. takes a bit of saving unless your loaded that is

spot on, the rattle was the start of it vibrating, then it let go and " chucked a leg out of bed"

time to either upgrade or just fit a second hand engine, dont get too upset about it, its anoying but not the end of the world and its a downside to owning a performance car

My point is that "braking" involves slowing or stopping the car using the brake pedal, whereas "breaking" is stripping a car down to a collection of parts. You chose the wrong spelling.

Ive yet to find a garage that does and has had a issue with a engine going bang, infact ive changed the oil on my subaru almost 12 times in the last 18 months and i dont even know where the crank sensor is on the car,,, my engine aint spun a shell yet !

engines when they get old get tired, just like people,,,,, abuse your body and one day,,, bang no real warnings,, its not cause that morning you never had breakfast,,, its down to lifestyles its the 10 years of coke/beer and pills

same with a engine. fast cars that get cheep will be abused more often,, then one day the engine gives up

I used to think that the **** oil change method of a oil change was bull**** but found this, - when you drain the oil to change it, it is different than just starting the car from cold , If you have a oil pressure gauge and look at it when you first start up after a oil change it takes around 30 -40 seconds for oil to come up to pressure on my car , and if you start it up from cold in the morning, oil pressure is straight there? so there is some truth in disconnecting the crank sensor when doing a oil change on these engines , whether it has effect of the big ends i don't know

There seems to be a lot of excess testosterone floating about on this thread, guys relax!!!!
I was going to say about priming the filter etc, and as mentioned above, after an oil change it does take a time to get pressure back, so anything that helps this can't be bad? I was also going to see if engine flush was used,(big no no) but it seems you lot have every angle covered with your infinite wisdom.
Just trying to help......

Wish I could help with the original problem, but never been in that position.

Seems to be that the warning noise was there but went away again, so giving the OP confidence that it was probably OK, causing the disaster. Interesting to know was the engine modded at all?

There seem to be a few engine failures arising, and also seems to be something that only started once Imprezas became common tools for modding. Certainly, when I had my first one back in 97, a) there were far fewer around and b) they were bulletproof.

Your correct mit, i always prime the filter, as that does take time to fill

The crank sensor debate is same as the DV/re-circ debate. nothing really proves one way or the other.
ive done it and also not done it. subaru dont do it when they service.

No testosterone mate, just find no need to pick people up because they mis type a word sorry i came across as rude as i did

My 02 STi is on 92,000 miles I know that the garage did not disconnect anything and for the last 6 years neither have I. Fill the filter, pour in the oil and then start it up without touching the throttle letting it idle fo a few minutes. Re-check the levels all done, not a knocking noise to be heard. Watch thisspace engine blows next week

The Crank Sensor dis-connect has been debated many times .... I have never done it, neither has any Subaru Garage I have used .... my car is now 9 years old - 18 services - 94,000 miles .... not an issue, and I don't think I'm 'Just Lucky' either - it simply isn't required IMO.

Anyway ... that doesn't help the OP ... the failure could be due to a multitude of things, hard to say what went wrong.

When the big ends on mine let go I was just crawling along in traffic at 30mph.

I can appreciate being gutted, I wasn't caining mine and I had only covered 2000 miles of ownership. Oh well, all re-built now and falling in love all over again!
