Was the MY99 the best of the breed? - discuss

Agreed.
I have a MY99 and before buying it, I thought about (nearly) all of the points you mention.
The only bummer is that you don't get map-reading lights on the MY99, but you do on the MY00!
Cheers!

MY99 was of course the best
But I'm biased
![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
The MY99 RB5 actually came with map lights.......
Performance wise against other scoobs when mine was standard I always had people commenting on how quick it was. Even when I had a full decat on, I could almost keep up with a P1, only started losing ground about 5k revs in 4th gear........

Same reason i chose a 99.
How does it compaitr to an L plate wrx type ra, person i met INSISTS its much much faster, wanted a race, i declined, not racing through streets at 100+ mph.
Do type Ra come in 5 door? i thought they had 24 bhp
Rock on 99 LOL

Funnily enough, I was thinking exactly the same last night.
I always liked DBM Subaru's, but preferred the slightly darker Dark Blue Metallic on MY99, than the Deep Blue Metallic on MY2000's. Would have to have the mirrors colour coded though.
I also prefer the 5 spoke wheels any day of the week.

You hit the nail on the head there m8
apart from the P1 it is known to be the best all round Impreza.
If you bought a RB5 which is a MY99 then you would have the map reading lights, colour coded door handels, skirts and mirrors![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I'd disagree with you - the MY00 is the one to have (but I'm biased !) I've not had a single problem with my ECU or anything else for that matter, and done nearly 30,000 excellent miles.
The colour coded handles aren't showing any signs of scratching - but more importantly than any of the above - the MY00 has the two small interior spot lights up by the mirror
that surely makes it the ultimate.....

Hi D
I'm biased to, as I probably had one of the first MY99 WRX imports in the country. Recently it's been set up at Power Station and the car is now amazing. Plus she did 270+bhp on the rolling road - no mods... you can't argue with any of it, and still under 20k miles.
Besides don't like the new shape much.

I have had the priveledge of owning both cars from new. I now have the best of both worlds.
I have a MY00 with all the colour coded bits (and they haven't scratched yet), the map lights, 5 spoke alloys fitted and 6 spoke as spares (because I prefer the 5's). I also have a MY99 ECU and although my MY00 ECU had no troubles this earlier ECU has more performance.
I also have the best IMHO and rarest colour, Mica red which wasn't available when I bought my '99 car.
These cars have got to be the best value for money for the breed, they're the best 'out of the box' looking, they're the cheapest to insure (I've just checked the insurance on a new MY01 and it's 40% dearer), they've got 4 pots as std and the handling is a godd compromise too.
I like it!

yep, gotta agree that the MY99 wins hands down.
sad to see mine go last week![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
and who said they MY99 didn't have the map reading lights. If you had the sunroof, then you got the map reading lights thrown in as they are built into the panel with the switches for the sunroof![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Mine's a MY00.
- Is the ECU problematic / causing the engine to be under powered?
Dunno, haven't driven a MY99 for comparison. Mine certainly doesn't feel underpowered. It does surge a (little) bit, but only when cold.
- The colour coded door handles & mirrors haven't scratched yet.
- I prefer the six spoke alloys. (Didn't at first, preferred the five spokers, but now reckon the six spoke jobs are much better.)
- Map lights - not really bothered.
- Metallic look centre console - looks quite good - was this on the MY99?
I also quite like the fact that the MY00 is "last of the MK1's" - surely destined to be a classic.
I'm probably guilty of justifying my purchase, but then I guess we all do this at some time or other.

P.S. Diablo - you were the guy at Kames last summer with the black Integra right? - if so, I've got a pic of you & your car...

The guy who I bought my MY99 off had colour-coded the sills, but not the handles.
I was thinking of getting the handles colour-coded - or should I paint them black? The current black looks a bit like worn plastic - so a deep black matt should make 'em look more solid...

Rich, yup that was me.
You have mail![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
As far as performance goes, try an MY99 ecu, think you might find a bit of a difference
, then again, you might have a good one.
Mine certainly was a good one (dealer's words, not mine).
Floyd, yup, seems you have the best of both worlds, but then yours doesn't meet the "out of the box" criteria![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Map lights....
.....LOL.....
I personally liked the bare plastic look, but thats down to personal choice. For those of you with coded sills, have a look under them![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Pen, glad to hear that

5 spokes are my favourite too - but they had to go in favour of a nice set of 17" MiM's

Diablo - agree with your comments
Although maybe a little biased I prefer the MY99 5-spokes to the MY00's 6-spokes - IMHO! My scoob is very quick which I'm sure Knowlesy and Chris L will back me up on ... maybe I've 'got a good one'?
MY00's are still bloody nice though

D.
I would say both the MY99 and MY00 ... there is little in it. Wheels is personal preference, ECU can be dealt with, MY00 has some small improvements in the gearbox department, color coded ...
Let's just say I'm not unhappy that (by accident) I ended up with the MY99.

Agree. MY99 or 00 with 99 ECU is a very rounded package out the box. Decent tyres, geometry, pads, discs, lines, exhaust and boost and it is a cracker. For those of us that imported from Europe I think we had a genuine bargain.

I'm very pleased with my MY00 although I want to try out a 99 ECU in it (babber, I'll get back in touch soon to take you up on your kind offer to try out yours!
) to try and get rid of the slight hesitation at about 2.8-3 ![](http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/badrazz.gif)
I like the colour coding, not sure about the 6 spokes though. Map lights are fantastic except I haven't got any maps so don't use them![](http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/rolleyes.gif)
In purely cosmetic terms I much prefer the front bumper/grille shape of the 99/00 over the earlier models. I also prefer the steering wheel and "leather" gear lever gaitor on the later cars.
The MY00 wins it though because it comes in this colour:
