carjacking is not common, my wife drives my car and is more embaressed about the loud pipe than she is worried about getting jacked.

people are either a) overly concerned about something that will probably never effect them

or

b)just like a nice old drama to chat about!

LOL

The fickleness of this board is amusing

One day it's "Drivel is a load of old bo11ocks"

The next it is nothing but carjackings and group buys....

Tomorrow it will be the price of fish

How many people on this BBS have actually been carjacked in the last year? Probably none, but lets say for the sake of argument 10. Of the membership most drive exotic/sports cars. Lets say to be generous only 1000 have this type of vehicle.

The probability then of being carjacked in any given year while driving a scoob is something like 1 in 100. Or if you drove your car for 50 years you have half a chance of being carjacked.

The probability of dying in an accident (I think we would agree this is a worse scenario) must be much greater.

Don't worry be happy

Very interesting how people always think it will never happen to them. Your right the chances are it wont - but what if it did. You'd change your tune then.

I for one would want to take the necessary precautions.

Yeah but come on..

the chances of getting car jacked are slim... that chances of getting hurt are slim as long as you hand over the keys.

It is not worth worrying about too much.. take precautions yes..
I think there is more chance of your car getting broken into than car jacked.

Perhaps I am wrong and we should all sell our nice cars and buy a rep mobile????? no thank you... I'd rather stick with my slim risk thanks...

Speedking - I have seen loads of threads in the last couple of months alone on the bb from people who have either had their house broken into and been threatened for their keys, or had their car nicked.

Do you not see these?

Group buy on common sense?

I'm happy with mine at the moment.

Those that are interested better pull their finger out, since I don't think there's too much of it about.

I have seen a couple about house break-ins and a couple where the carjack was threatened but did not actually happen. I have estimated 10. If you can post 10 threads where separate people have actually been carjacked then I will revise my calculation.

Lets say 20, that gives 25 years driving for 1/2 a chance, still not much is it?

Well here are two for a start: -

I was carjacked while trying to sell my M3 last August (Never saw the car again!)

Also Dave from Nottingham was carjacked in his impreza in May last year by, we believe by the same blokes (got his car back after a week)

I was subject to an attempted robbery in a BMW 523i in Cannes whilst I was in the motor with my wife and child, nothing taken and no-one hurt. Its not just an issue for the UK, you just don't hear so much about it elsewhere as its usually tourists...Obviously those French blokes know nothing about motors....LOL. I do think though if I'd had the 520i that I'd have been ignored...

Cheers

Tiggs,
What may not be an issue to you, is obviously an issue to a large number of people in the community.

The fact is it happens........the fact is that it could happen to anyone at anytime........fact is, is that it is more common.

I'm sure people STILL THINK NOW that they will never get there car stolen or there house broken into. That IMHO is the wrong attitude to take.

If people are not aware of these issues, the situation will only get worse and worse. EVEN I keep my door locked when driving, and I am 6ft 6ins, 17stone and well hard!!!!!!!

Perhaps some people are getting slightly over nervous about the whole thing, but they have good reason to IMHO.

There is nothing better than having these issues discussed, because if nothing else, at least it raises the communitys awareness.

Regards,
Shaun.

shaun,

getting hit on the head by a meteor with an alien on top is an issue for me, i just think its unlikey so i dont worry about it.

no doubt if i got hit on the head by such a thing i'd be on here getting everyone excited about how it happens everywhere and we should all by anti alien alarms.

Tiggs

ps- im not eating a dump valve for 2 and 1 in germany!

shaun,

i just read your post again and, as im bored, i have decided to take issue with some points feel free to ignore me!

"The fact is it happens"

err.... so what? lots of stuffs happens, most of it more likley to happen than this.

"the fact is that it could happen to anyone at anytime"

err...see above.

"fact is, is that it is more common."

more than what? slipping on bananas? its hardly as common as crashing your car is it?

"I'm sure people STILL THINK NOW that they will never get there car stolen or there house broken into."

yep, me! i belive that as it is more likely that i wont then i can belive in that. and if it were to happen "on my door step" i hope i would be sensible enough to realise that it doesnt happen on everyones just because it effected me.

Tiggs

Yes people can get car-jacked/broken into, but you're more likely to get run over by a bus. So look when you cross the road and get a cat1 alarm and tracker fitted to your car.

Me? I'm looking for a hard-hat to stop them pesky meteorites!

Doh! I hadn't thought of the full meteorite implications!

But what happens if the meteorite hits a bus and it swerves and crashes into me?

You're neglecting the chance a meteorite with an alien on might hit tiggs who's forgotten his armour and happens to be driving a bus which crashes into my house!

I thought it wouldn't happen to me, but it did and it's not very funny when you've got 6 guys kicking **** out of you and your girlfriend is in the car.

In addition to Lizzy's incident I personally know of one. Very violent, owner wife and baby threatened at home after the door was kicked down. Plus an additional three unsuccessful attempts.

Group buy on dentures Tiggs.

Speedking your hypothesis is fundamentally flawed, as has already been proven and wild assumptions can not be converted into meaningful statistics.

What is needed is a rational reaction to the possibility of theft/car jacking. Not flippant dismissal of the danger.

A number of people are electrocuted each year. The fact that it's statistically insignificant doesn't mean I'd advise standing in a bucket of water and fumbling around inside a TV attached to the mains supply.

Interesting thread. People like to minimise risk, and there's nothing wrong with that. Each person will come to their own conclusions about how to balance the perceived threat against the cost and practicality of precautions.

It's just plain silly to poke fun at people looking for ways to minimise one particular risk by citing another, more probable risk. Risk isn't an either/or thing, and such statements belong up there with "I may as well take heroin because I could get hit by a bus tomorrow".

Common sense to me sounds like perhaps having a good old chat about carjacking, discussing ways of preventing or avoiding it if possible, and then armed with this information taking whatever action you feel necessary. Which as far as I can tell is what's been happening...

I only ever wear rubber boots if we've hired one of those Scandinavian videos

U want a side salad or fries with that dump valve?

My wife spends more time behind the wheel of the the Scoob than I do, which may not be the case if she read this bbs!

The problem is getting the right balance. I try to encourage her to be alert to the possible dangers, but don't want to her to become so paranoid that she won't drive the thing.

A bit like gettin your wallet lifted or a handbag snatched. Just cos it's possible don't mean it's probable.

LOL @ Tiggs

I'm with Mo on this one...

Take sensible precautions then forget about it and take comfort in knowledge that you have attempted to stop it happening to you. At the end of the day the sun goes down...I mean at the end of the day **** happens, you can either spend your life cocooned or learn to deal with it...I'll do the later

Mike
