Default Noob Performance Questions

Hi All,

Well i've owned my first subaru now for a little over a week and i am loving every minute of it.

The car i own is a mica red UK Impreza 2000 Turbo (2000reg). And i have a few questions that i'm hoping some of you guys and gals can help with.

1) Being a Vreg 2000 UK spec model - can anyone tell me what type of engine i have in the vehicle is at MY00? I've heard this thrown about a little.

2) The car accelerates well and can hear the turbo spool from about 3000rpm onwards. I haven't owned a turbo car before but was a big fast ford enthusiast for a number of years and was around a lot cosworths etc. Many had atmospheric dump valves rather than recirc ones - they generally said that it allowed less turbo stall and to release the pressure on both acceleration/deceleration and as such prolonged the life of the turbo . My engine is completely standard, its on 89k with full service history and has the orgine OEM dumpvalve. Would i do any harm by upgrading the dump valve - ideally i want to cause less stress to the turbo as its got 89 k on it and although speeding isn't sensible and i have a clean license i do know i have a heavy right foot and do like to accelerate hard sometimes.. My old ford lads have said it's a good start, wondered what you guys thought?

3) I've had a long history of owning modified/performance cars - and as such rule of thumb to get more power, better/smoother acceleration and an increase in bhp/torque your starting point would be air/fuel/exhaust so normally upgraded to a High Flow cold air intake, uprated fuel pump/injectors and then a full exhaust system for the waste gasses - combined with a remap would normally give you good gains. Is this the same on the impreza's? I already have a ninja exhaust system. Will you get gains from cold air fed high flow kit or is it more suitable to upgrade the OEM panel filter and leave the standard air box in place? I've heard simota? are quite good. Or Apexi.

I'll leave it there for the moment.

Cheers in anticipation of your response all

1 : 2litre boxer engine + turbo your car has a Phase 2 engine (as for tech specs of it i've no idea sorry)
2 : Leave the recirc alone
3 : Upgrade OEM panel filter
To see what is avaliable remap wise www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk he is by no means the only remapper but he does do nearly everything for the impreza.

Its always a tricky one isn't it. I've done some research and come across varying opinions on the dv and air filter.

Alot recommend that you keep the Subaru model as it allows the turbo to spin with a lot more ease and you find that an aftermarket one often hinders acceleration. So i think im going to stick with that to be honest. To be honest that suprises me though, alot of performance car nuts use BOV's and Dumpvalves on their Turbo'd vehicles. Wonder why it is if it doesn't offer any protection etc? But i'll go with what you guys say on that.

The Air Filter i have to admit, i am not 100% convinced, alot of the Jap Subaru Forums say you'll get much better performance, smoother throttle response, quicker pick up etc with a high flow filter and intake - and you get a lot of wastegate chatter apparently which i love!! With a good cold air feed and well positioned heat shield would this not be preferable?

In addition they talk about blanking off your original dump valve and just leaving it as is....this sounds a bit bizarre to me, and not sure what exactly they mean by doing so. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I expect most people just like the noise.
I have an induction kit with heat sheild and cold feed BUT it seems the OE box is good for upto about 350bhp (allegedly).

For MY99 onwards majority of people recommend to keep the box and replace with a better panel filter. Reason being is that the MAF sensor on these models is quite sensitive and fitting an induction kit upsets the MAF.

Dump Valve Im not sure on. I think its more of a preference thing. I have HKS which I think sounds great and have no problems. What you need to bear in mind is that once you have fitted said modifications and had a remap, all these things are compensated for by the mapper so you`ll get a safe responsive car.

Your injectors should be 440`s so no need to change them unless your going for big power. In regards to your turbo, just enjoy it. If it gives up on you, Iv got a spare TD04 lying around

cheers guys. I think i may give the panel filter a go first as its the cheapest option, i've heard simota is one of the best for the money £29.50 unless anyone knows any others to recommend?

Then may be give an aftermarket dv a go and do a comparison between the two see which one is best for me.

After that i'll go from there - i always say i won't go nuts and keep it standard but hell that never happens!

Cheers guys
