There is a knocking noise on my drivers front side suspension.
When I go over a pot hole or man hole etc, there is a knocing noise. Passangers side is fine.
The shock is AST and is only 6 weeks old, an ideas of anything it could be and ways to chek etc?

The strut could of failed, try pushing down with your weight on where the top mount is. if should be silent. If it knocks then the strut is dodgy.

more than likely its either the inner or outer track-rod end.. if you jack up that side and move the wheel back and forth, then check for play on both track-rod ends

Tried to push the car down this morning and its way to hard to move. I have noticed that it only knocks on a hole, not on a bump like a speed hump. on steeering its fine etc, just pot holes. anything like antiroll bar bushes etc?

steering might feel fine, but you wont really no till you jack up and check for play...
while you have it jacked you can also check for play in the wishbone balljoint, and just by moving the wheel in every direction you should be able to find where its coming from

Defo check your drop links, Best to take the offending side off & have a feel with your hands, If the joints are V sloppy, Replace.. Very simple job to do.

I am doing an oil change tomorrow so while I am under the car, will take the wheel and check.
Do you know if a drop link for a hawkeye is different than a newage?

Sorry, Don't know to be honest, never needed to look under a Hawkeye..

You need to take the tension off the drop links to check for play..

Cheers

Hi,

I tried to take the tension off etc but it never felt like any play. I took this pic as the only thing I wasnt sure of if the gap around the ARB and the bush is normal etc?

The front suspension leg has dropped due to being jacked up, So that gap in the Arb could be expected. to be really certain about the drop links you should remove, You will then also be able to check for freeplay/wobble in the anti roll bar bushes, by pulling & pushing the end Etc.

I jacked the hub to take the tension off. The gap in the picture is either on top of the bush or below it etc. Do you mean take off the drop link to test it etc?

Yes, Remove the drop link & you can test both at the same time, You will know for sure then.

the drop links wear on the ball joint which then gives a little bit of movement that then leads to the "loud" clunking for suck a small bit of play on the drop link.

There is no play when rotating the hub etc so I would guess the track rod ends are OK?
There didnt seem to be any play in the bottom ball joint either.
Might be the new shock has failed.

rotating the hub wont tell you if there gone, hold the hub at 3 and 9 o'clock positions and move the hub harshly back and forth in the direction of the steering to check for play, probs easier if the wheel is on so you can get a better grip but wheel needs to be off the ground on the side your checking..
