Default Over heating!!

As title, the car overheated on the way home tonight, the temperature gauge kept going right up and then dropping back.
After it had cooled down it did seem to use some water any ideas as it s never used water before and all levels are ok?
It s a bugeye JDM WRX if it makes any difference?

Could be a sticking themostat, the water loss would have been through the expansion tank overflow.

Is there any big give away that it could be the thermostat,or is it just a matter of trying it and seeing?
Also where s it located as im new to boxer engines?

I haven't had to take one out yet so I don't know!! You can test the thermostat by putting it in a up and pouring boiling water onto it, you should see the thermostat open then.

Just had a look and it may be attached to the water pump, where the pump connects to the radiator. As I said, I've never had to look for one on a scoob and the manual's I have are for the blobeye & bugeye.

i had the same problem, i changed my thermostat, then the water pump, followed by my radiator and header tank, then took it to the scooby clinic where they did a test on it and upset me by saying my head gasket had gone big time and told me to get rid of it sharpish, which i did, i had to top my radiator up every day would lose all the water within 10 miles, my heaters just blew out cold air,

It was fine again today,it doesn t seem like a head gasket as it s not been losing water and there s no scum in the water/cream in the oil etc?
A few weeks back it started to rise up to the red so i pulled over to check and couldn t see any probs so carried on driving and it sorted it self out and has been fine since, except last night obviously.
