Opinions: Mint Type R vs Bug/Blob STi
I'm in the process of getting another scoob and am in a bit of quandary as to what to do.
Originally, I've been after getting either an 02/03 STi, ideally a JDM but in my price range they're all nails the ones I've looked at so far, inc some UK Prodrive/PPP ones.
Today I've spotted a couple of very nice looking V5 Type R's, which appear to be a bit cheaper but in much better nick.
I had a V5 STi Type R Ltd about 3 years ago which I loved but this time around, thought I'd go for something a little newer, slighty nicer inside etc etc
But I'm now thinking I could get a really nice classic with reasonable mileage, some nice mods (wheels, FMIC, remap, Defi's etc etc) and still have a fair chunk of money left over or go for a high mileage (but well cared for) UK newage STi thats pretty much standard (I'm classing PPP/Prodrive versions as standard) for a little more money.
What would you guys do?

Well for the top type r it leaves you enough to get the uprated MY03 JDM crank, bearings, pistons and rods to rebuild it for a bit of piece of mind the bottom type R has mega miles on in comparison

Ok I would leave the 2nd type r alone, think there was some previous issues with it and has been up for sale a couple of times, the 02 sti looks ok and I think they are the best out of the box Subaru to modify as they co e with the 6 speed and I am sure the engines are looked upon as being the strongest out of the range in factory form. Someone I am sure will correct me if I am wrong and as for the 03 sti even if it has had full service history I would not touch a 03 car with 90k on the clock as you willbe able to find one with less. If it were me I would go for the first type r and with the change either tweak it or bank the cash difference and hold onto it if any thing goes wrong or with the change buy yourself a cheap run around and save the type r for evenings

Well, it will be for an everyday car, but I work from home so I wont necessarily be using it every day if that makes sense?
I've just got off the phone with the owner of the top V5 Type R, decent guy. Member of Sheffield Subaru Club, has owned the car for 19 months since it was brought into the country. Had Bob Rawle do the remap (open source) when the decat, induction and Warbro was fitted all at the same time, been run on V power/Tesco 99. Not used in the wet, done 6000 miles over 19 months, new cambelt 1k miles ago. The FMIC although fitted, isnt plumbed in fully as he was told by Bob not to run it connected until it could be mapped at the same time.
Even though its got a full 3" decat system, he says he's never had any boost creep/boost cut (which mine used to do using the Apexi FC without the AVCR though), its currently running 1.4 bar and seems like the geniune article. Its def nice to talk to someone who's selling one of these that isnt a complete t*sser trying to sell on a piece of carp, and is an enthusiast!!!
I'm getting a warm fuzzing feeling about this one.....

you will have a hard job finding a performance car in excellent condition for reasonable money that hasn't had paint or panels or major engine work at some point as most are used everyday, and people buy these car's and think thats the biggest expense done with!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I've got a couple to look at tomorrow, one Blobeye STi round the corner from me and that Type R. I think with an MD321T, headers, injectors, map and big brakes and that Type R could be a scortcher...

That top Type R is the one for me to, best colour as well not that im biased or anything lol....
If you think the seller is genuine and your getting good vibes, (as you said you are) go for it, it looks like a brilliant car and im sure you will enjoy it a lot

The standard turbo wont be there for very long anyway... And if Bob mapped it to run that, I'd be happy and confident with his decision.

IMHO those engines won't like much more boost so what's the point.
If you really must mess with it, pull the motor and either upgrade the internals or drop a 2.5 in it, I've had a ride in one and it's like a MKII Escort, sideways on demand.

Type R's are great cars but for daily driving i think id prefer a newage STI, this is one of the reasons my type R is for sale coz i want to go back to one car.
Would of thought an MD321T would be really laggy on a non AVCS 2.0, probably better off with an MD321H and safer for the engine and box.

Well, went to see both. Seeing the Type R has re-affirmed that I dont want another classic; lovely car but been there and done that. Going to wait till a black bug/blob comes along that is right.
As for an MD312T being laggy on a 2.0, I've been doing my research and for what I want it fits the bill, and talking to the person that will doing the mapping, he thinks its the best fit.
I think there is some reality that needs to be applied to some of the issues that are written about on here by people that read stuff that other people have written about stuff they've read about etc etc.....
I went out recently in a 421BHP UK bug STi that had a Greddy TD06 20g (ok not at 321T but it'll do for the purpose of this exercise) that was supposed to be really laggy on a 2.0lt ... Yes, driving along in 6th at 40mp and planting did nothing for a while, but thats what the clutch and other gear options are for... you drive round it and I found it great. So I think when you look at spool and boost etc in writting, yes they do appear to be laggy but I personally think that a little bit of spool up time isnt anything to get hot under the collar about when you use the gears/revs correctly, just drive the car accordingly

There have been plenty of posts on here from peeps that have tried 20g's on a 2.0 and found it to be laggy.
Still, if you've no objection to stirring the porridge a wee bit (ie dropping gears), fair play ta ya.
